died peacefully at her home in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, DC, where she lived for over forty years. The cause of death was metastatic cancer. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas C. Goodwin and her brother David Bernard. She is survived by her brother Claude Bernard and several nieces.
Dorothy was born in St. Louis, Mo, the daughter of the noted sociologists, Luther Lee Bernard and Jessie Bernard. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College. She worked for 30+ years for Campbell, Peachey & Associates, helping plan many major cultural events in DC, including the annual Kennedy Center Honors.
Dorothy was a woman of many interests, travel ranking high among them. She nurtured a deep knowledge and passion for the Middle East. Her recent adventures brought her to Syria, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Iran, Israel, India, Palestine and Jordan with frequent stops to visit friends in England and Scotland. She also had a great fondness for all dogs, but particularly the noble rat terrier. All of her friends will sorely miss her sharp intelligence, quick wit, impeccable style, and big smile.
