Edward “Ed” Ferreira, age 88, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home in Warren, RI on Saturday, December 19, 2020 with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of the late Julia S. (Ferreira) Ferreira.
Born on Madeira Island in Portugal, a son of the late Constantino “Gus” and Amelia (Castro) Ferreira, he immigrated to the United States at age two and was a longtime resident of Bristol and Florida.
A graduate of Colt Memorial High School in Bristol, Class of 1950, he graduated Cum Laude with an Associate’s of Science Degree in Business Administration from Johnson & Wales University. A Veteran of the United States Navy, he served during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Knapp. In 2017, Ed was awarded a once-in-a-lifetime experience as a recipient of the Villages Honor Flight, with his Guardian “Angel”, Joyce Cover. He worked at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft and then as a Cartographer for the Defense Mapping Agency in West Warwick for 20 years before retiring.
A skilled musician, he was a drummer and a member of both the Kingsman and Generations Drum and Bugle Corps. He also served as Vice President for the Bristol Police Color Guard and Drum Corps. He enjoyed traveling, playing golf and bocce, bowling, swimming, square dancing, boating and fishing. As an active lifelong communicant at St. Elizabeth’s Church, he volunteered as the CYO guidance counselor and basketball coach for many years. Ed was also very active in the community, coaching Babe Ruth baseball, was a member of Sowam’s Horseman’s Association., Elks Lodge, and Laurel Park Improvement Association (LPIA).
Ed is survived by two daughters, Lori Vales and her husband David of Warren and Susan Abramson and her husband Stewart of East Greenwich; one son, Mark Ferreira and his wife Cheryl of Bristol; seven grandchildren, Chelsea Vales, Davey Vales, Julianne Abramson-Denson and her husband Chris, Austin Abramson, Peter Ferreira and his wife Meghan, Nicholas Ferreira and Lauren Ferreira; one great grandchild, Brayden Vales; many nieces and nephews and longtime companion Peg Lawrence. He was the brother of the late Joseph Ferreira and Maria Ferreira.
