Walter John Kowalski, age 90 of Warren, died Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, Michigan. He was born August 10, 1924 in Bakerton, Pennsylvania, son of the late Anthony and the late Josephine (nee: Jubinski) Kowalski.With thanks & praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Walter for his service to our country during World War II. A soldier in the U.S. Army, Walter ultimately attained the rank of Private First Class while serving in Battery B of the 46th Field Artillery Battalion as a Cannoneer. He saw many battles from the Ardennes (France) to the Rhineland (Germany), as well as many other sights in the Central European region. Among the various medals and commendations Walter earned while defending the cause of freedom & liberty, the most notable would be the Purple Heart he was awarded for battle injuries sustained on March 22, 1945 in Germany. With bravery and valiance, Walter answered the call to duty and stood in harm's way for our future,…and we extend our sincere and posthumous gratitude to this decorated veteran.Before marching off to War, Walter asked the love of his life for her hand in marriage. However, the nuptials would ultimately wait until Walter returned home safely...and finally the two, Walter and Veronica "Irene" Potoczek, would be joined in Holy Matrimony, a union that would last for over 68 years. Walter worked and retired as a supervisor for Chrysler Motors. When Walter was not working, his life revolved around his family and his other love, deer hunting. Annually, Walter returned to Pennsylvania to hunt with his many family relations. Walter was the beloved husband of Veronica "Irene," and the dear father of Allan (Theresa) Kowalski, Anthony (Cheryl) Kowalski, Karen Kowalski, and Pam (Ken) Matties. Loving grandfather of Blake, Amanda, Scott (Ashley), Jesse, and great-grandfather of Chase and Mackenzie. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members. A Memorial Mass for Walter will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 15th at St. Mark Catholic Church, 4401 Bart Avenue in Warren. The family will receive guests 1/2 hour prior to the Mass. Celebrating the Funeral Liturgy will be Reverend Fr. Stanley Obloj.Arrangements have been entrusted to the D.S.
