Margaret Foster

Margaret Angeline (Szpanelewski) Foster, died Friday, September 3, 2021 at the Autumn Woods Health Care Facility in Warren, Michigan. She was born June 12, 1927 in Roseville, Michigan, daughter of the late Frank Joseph and the late Theresa Stella (nee: Eland) Hintz.

In her earlier years, Margaret had quite the eclectic work history. It all began with her retail experiences with the iconic Federal’s Department Store in Roseville. A shopping staple for countless thousands of Macomb county residents, Margaret loved the customer service aspect of her work and truly enjoyed being in the public eye. Of course, it didn’t hurt that she was helping others to fulfill their shopping desires,…and we all love the elation we feel when we’re treating ourselves to something special, right? From there, Margaret’s next venture took her to the folks at St. Vincent de Paul’s where she worked as a sorter for the charitable organization. Still engaged in retail, but on more of a humanitarian level, Margaret found great reward in the time she spent there. Then came her stint with the Mega Fast Food chain, McDonald’s. Again…this was all about her earlier years when Mickey D’s was just beginning to make a name for itself. So Margaret decided to help that process along when she applied for a position with the Food King…and got it! Now, the momentous aspect is not that she landed a job with McDonald’s, but that Margaret was the first woman they brought aboard their local team. A very forward-thinking thing to do, Margaret helped many people to “have it their way.”

A descriptive word for Margaret would have been frugal. She was always mindful of her finances and careful with her spending habits,…which is what led to her to joining the ranks of the “Coupon Cutter’s.” That’s right, if there was a deal out there, Margaret was going to hunt it down,…and most likely had a coupon for it. It’s a great way to accrue a wealth of goods with a lot less spent at the counter. Again, being the trend-setter,…today you see them all the time, the ladies with their coupon caddie in the shopping cart as they stroll the aisles for their cost-saving treasures. It truly is an art of its own, and Margaret could have taught the course.

Speaking of art, another defining term for Margaret would have been crafty. Though she dabbled in a number of things, it was her work with naugahyde that stood out above the rest. From the purses she fabricated to the unique cigarette holders she produced, her expertise with the faux-leather pieces of art were evidence of her artistic flair and her ability to craft something so beautiful simply by envisioning it in her mind.

Yet of all that will reign supreme when Margaret comes to mind, it’s her faith in God that will rise to the top and make her shine, A devout and faithful parishioner of St. Anne Catholic Church in Warren, she was active in both the church and her community,…especially when it came to her association with the ladies of the Active Christian Women’s Club (ACWC). Known by many as prayerful servants of God, Margaret truly enjoyed ministering with her fellow club members and garnering the joy that their friendship brought.

A loving wife, mother and grandmother (to the great’s and great-great’s as well), Margaret’s essence truly defined the finest points of frugality, craftiness and faith,…and her heart defined the finest aspects of love and care for a family she treasured and adored. She helped fulfill God’s Greatest Commission by bringing Him to the world. May she now enjoy her Heavenly reward by resting safely in God’s loving arms. She will be missed beyond expression and loved beyond measure.

Margaret was the beloved wife of the late Norman Foster, and formerly of Joseph Szpanelewski with whom she shared over 40 years of marriage. Dearest mother of Daniel Szpanelewski, Diane Burgett, Larry Szpanelewski, and the late Patricia Szpanelewski. Margaret was the loving grandmother of Dominic, Ascenda (Billy), Kera (Daniel), Jason, Mitchell, Nathan, Alex (Katie); great-grandmother of Joseph, Devlin, Allison, Kyla, Ethan, Abigail, Freya, Inara, Tyler, William: and great-great grandmother of Addison. She was preceded in death by her 4 siblings.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home in Warren, Michigan.
