At the young age of 21, Elizabeth moved to Michigan to start a new chapter in her life. A few years later she was set up on a blind date by her sister Rose with her husband’s brother, Robert. After meeting in Christmas of 1954, the couple were wed on July 2, 1955. The Huling girls had married the Popp brothers.
The new couple settled into Detroit home right by Northland Mall. With their family growing, Elizabeth became the family homemaker, but once the children were of school age she began cosmetology school. While the kids were at school she tended to her customers in the home’s basement where her studio was set up to give everyone the latest trendy hair style. In 1968, the family moved to Warren, right behind St. Anne Catholic Church. Warren would remain their home for over 20 years. While living in Warren, she started working in retail sales at a jewelry store, helping other’s find just the right gift for the right occasion. After many years of work, Elizabeth finally joined Robert in retirement just before the couple moved to their Shelby Township home.
Elizabeth loved life to the fullest and also loved to travel. She and Robert enjoyed their cottage up North, but also traveled the country. They would take road trips everywhere, stopping at national parks along the way and visiting their family that was scattered across the country. They even made it to Alaska on a cruise, but travel was not all that they did together. Robert was passionate about his flower garden and every flower garden needs a supervisor. Elizabeth was happy to be the “supervisor” of Robert’s garden and help him with his beautiful creation, that is, until she was told her “supervising” was best done as an observer. The most important time Elizabeth and Robert spent together was every day at 4:00pm. They had reinvented the British Tea Time with a much better version, “Wine Time.” With Elizabeth’s Tawny Port and Robert’s red, the two took time out of each day to enjoy each other’s company with a “just 2 fingers” full glass of wine (measured by the space between the index and pinky). At the end of the day when Elizabeth wanted to relax she would either sew, quilt or knit. Everyone had a Christmas stocking she sewed & beaded.
She was a wonderful mother. She brilliantly toed the line between mother and friend, making sure her children knew where that line was. Her kindness and compassion is what has shaped her children in who they are today. Her daughter Lisa will always remember taking regular walks with her mother, just the two of the spending time together to talk. She was very interested in her children’s lives, always wanting to know the details of their day, whether it was spent with friends or out on a date. This love and affection continued with her grandchildren. She and Robert were at every game and event to show their love and support for their family. She loved having her grandchildren up to the cottage up North and they loved to play in the dirt pile. Her family also loved her food. She made the best cheesecake, coconut cream crème pie, apple pie and stuffed cabbage.
With having lived a full life, there was something missing in Elizabeth’s life. In 2004 the missing piece to her life found her. At a young age she had had a son who was adopted by a family that was ready for children. That child grew into the man today known as Dale and when he searched for his biological mother, he found Elizabeth. With open arms, Dale rejoined with his mother, but he did not just gain a mother but also a brother, sister, stepfather, niece, nephews and many cousins. Like the final stitch to complete her sewing, Dale was the final stitch to complete her family.
Elizabeth passed away on January 3, 2023 at the age of 93. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert for 66 years.
