Born and raised in Detroit, Brian was a mere 17 years of age when he took a big step in starting his young adult life by becoming an airman in the U.S. Air Force. Serving from 1956 thru 1960, Brian’s return to civilian life found him choosing another important chapter to his story when he was accepted to the Detroit Police Academy and ultimately becoming one of Detroit’s Finest. From 1961 to 1968, Brian witnessed much as a police officer for the city and always extended his utmost in protecting and serving his community,..towards the end, during a very difficult time for Detroit. In 1968, his training and experience would become quite attractive to the city of Warren, the same folks who offered him a position with their police force, a career that spanned over 31 years until his retirement in 1999. All told, Brian spent 38 years leaving the house each day to lay his life on the line and unselfishly give of himself so that others could live as peacefully as possible. For the sacrifices made and his willingness to stand in harm’s way for both Detroit and Warren, we honor his dedication and service, and extend our posthumous gratitude for accepting his daily challenges with bravery and valor.
In between all of that police work came something special in Brian’s world when he married the love of his life, Rosalie. Following a period of courting and falling in love, the two lovebirds tied the knot and became husband & wife. It was a loving relationship that lasted 53 years until Rosalie’s passing.
When it came to enjoying his favorite pastimes, one of Brian’s supreme pleasures was found in supporting his iconic football team, the Wolverine’s from the University of Michigan. Known for being one of their die-hard fans, the only color that mattered on game day was Blue & Gold, Baby! Possessing a history that is rife with competition, camaraderie and champions, rooting for the “home team” was in Brian’s blood and his devotion was pure.
A little “me time” often found Brian feeding his mind as well. One way was in his penchant for reading the newspaper each day. Like most guys back in the day, and obviously the pre-internet era, Brian enjoyed turning those pages and soaking up all the written word and news of the day. It was his life-line to the world. The other “brain-fueling” activity he enjoyed was solving crossword puzzles. He simply loved the moments he set aside to sit with his pen & puzzle and give the ol’ cerebrum a workout. Crossing that finish line with a fully completed puzzle was the cat’s meow for Brian.
Yet of all that brought Brian joy and sweet release, nothing could match the moments spent in the company of his cherished and treasured family,…especially his precious grandchildren. They were truly the light of his world and a catalyst for pressing on. A loving, strong and proud man, Brian set a pattern that molded the hearts and lives of those entrusted to his care, both at home and in the community. He touched a multitude of hearts and souls in his journey through life and leaves a legacy that is strong and true. He will be missed and loved immensely.
Brian was the beloved husband of the late Rosalie. Loving father of Susan (Jason Mouat) and Brian E. (Samantha). Cherished grandfather of Dennis, Kaitlyn, Michael, Natalie, Andrew, and Matthew. Adored great-grandfather of Jaxon. Dear brother of Jim (Janet) and Robert Alan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
