Nancy V. Koster, 83, of Waldorf, MD, entered eternal life on March 23, 2016, at Solomons Nursing Center in Solomons, MD. She was reunited with her beloved husband of almost 66 years, Charles "Chuck" Koster, who had passed away earlier in March.
Mrs. Koster provided decades of valuable administrative support to the Federal government, retiring from the U.S. Census Bureau in 1990. People would gather around her office door watching how fast she was able to type. Gifted with a lovely soprano voice, she had been involved in United Methodist church choirs for most of her life. She had also been active in the Birchwood City Community Association in Oxon Hill, MD.
She is survived by sons, William Koster and wife Linda Esker of MD, and James Koster and wife Mary Peterson of NM, and by daughters, Barbara Belak and husband Ray Belak of NV, and Linda Horty and husband Patrick Horty of MD. She is also survived by three grandsons and six great-grandchildren, Brandon Koster and his wife Courtney, along with their children Logan and Aubrey of TX, Alex Horty and his wife Tiffany, along with their daughters Shawna, Shelby, and Sabrina of MD, and Thomas Horty, along with his daughter Layla Horty of MD. She is also survived by brother-in-law Robert Koster widower of Janet Koster, sisters-in-law Marie Koster and Elizabeth Koster, all of PA, and brothers-in-law John Dooley of FL and Joe Santella of PA. She left behind many other loving relatives of multiple generations, as well as a great number of family friends.
In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by their infant son, Robert Koster, parents John and A. Evelyn Sheppard, sisters Joan Pine, Georgeanne Dooley, and Margaret Santella, and brother John Sheppard, as well as by Chuck's brothers Henry, Jr. and John Koster. She was also predeceased by nephews John Dooley, Jr., Edward Rotzinger, Jr., and John Sheppard, Jr., and by great-niece Christine Cianci.
Mrs. Koster was best known for her devotion to her husband Chuck, and for her love of singing. After moving to the DC area, she was an active member of the chancel choirs at Oxon Hill, Clinton, and Good Shepherd United Methodist Churches. For several years she performed with the Maryland Choral Society, and even after her retirement continued to perform annually at the Census Bureau's Christmas concert. Her house was filled daily with her piano playing and rehearsing, and family get-togethers almost always included everyone singing around the piano. She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and other games, including regular Bunco nights with friends in Oxon Hill. She will be missed by many.
Viewing and visitation will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016, from 11 am to 12:30 pm at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Waldorf, MD, with a celebration of life immediately afterwards. Interment services will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 9:00am.
