John J. Smoot, 94, of Walbridge, Ohio died at Parkcliffe Alzheimer’s Community on Saturday, May 16, 2015. He was born on, February 2, 1921 in Akron, Ohio to Escan and Ethel (Stark) Smoot. John married Evelyn J. Kreider.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII. After the service, he worked for Davey Tree Company in Texas. In 1953 he started his employment with Toledo Edison as an equipment operator, where he continued to work before retiring in 1983. In his down time John enjoyed woodworking and repairing appliances. He would often do repair work for friends and neighbors.
John is survived by his loving son, Stephen C. (Marie) Smoot; grandchildren, Stephen S. (Heather) Smoot and Stephanie M. (Brian) Jennings; great grandchildren, Zachary and Nolan Smoot, Sophia and Evelyn Jennings; niece Jolynn Phillips; nephew, Robert Mayfield and step daughter, Marilyn Looman. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife and siblings, Richard and Robert Smoot, Grace Mayfield and Marian Hoy; nephew, George Richard Mayfield and step son Donald Woleslagel.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. in the Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 701 N. Main St., Walbridge, Ohio, 43465 (419-666-3121) where a VFW Service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home at 10:45 A.M. on Thursday, May 21, 2015. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 A.M. at St. Jerome Catholic Church, 300 Warner St., Walbridge, Ohio, 43465. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
