Frances Anise Young Hammond, 75, Christian, devoted and loving wife, beloved mother and grandmother, outstanding sister, and a caring friend to all, entered fully into the presence of the Lord on Monday, December 5, 2022. Frances battled a number of medical challenges throughout her adult life, which contributed to her passing. Regardless of those difficulties, she was a warrior to the end, always there to comfort others in times of need with her beautiful signature smile. Her family was thankful to be by her side when she passed.
Born and raised in Greenville, SC, she is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 54 years, Leon "Bud" Hammond; daughters, Lynn Hammond Patterson (Chris) of Charleston, SC, Laura Hammond Fulk (Billy) of Charleston, SC; grand-twins, Kai Nolan Fulk and Isabella Luna Fulk of Charleston; sisters, Martha Lou Kennedy (Paul) and Bette Jean Ellison. Preceding her in death were her parents, Ronald D. Young and Gertrude Whetstone Young, as well as her oldest sister, Mae Anne Coote and brother-in-law, Steven Ellison.
Frances graduated from Greenville High School and attended the University of South Carolina. While at USC, Frances was invited to the West Side Baptist Church Youth Training Union by her cousin Junelle Cook (Mahlon) where she met the love of her life, Bud. A little over a year later, on January 20, 1968, they married and after completing his studies at Carolina, Bud joined the United States Air Force. Relocating to Del City, Oklahoma, it was there they had their two daughters, Lynn and Laura, who France lovingly referred to as her two little Okies.
After Bud's service in the USAF, he and Frances moved to Lugoff, SC for a position with DuPont, where they were thrilled to be geographically closer to both sides of the family. Seven years later, they were transferred to Waynesboro, VA where they lived for 35 years and made lifelong friends. In 2015, they returned to the native state, retiring at the family home on beautiful Lake Murray. Frances' Christian faith was always a priority in her life, and no matter where she lived, she was active in her church serving in the nursery, leading children's classes, volunteering in AWANA's, singing in the choir and serving in various church committees. Frances' beautiful smile warmed and comforted the hearts of so many. She dearly loved her family and friends and cherished the time she spent with all of them.
Family visitation is scheduled at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home - West Columbia Chapel, 820 West Dunbar Rd., West Columbia, SC 29170 at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2022, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. with interment at Southland Memorial Gardens following the memorial service.
