Donald Forrest Smith, 92, of Cayce moved to heaven on December 3, 2021. He was born on April 5, 1929 in the magical little town of Saltville, VA. He was a son of the late Robert E. Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth Booth Smith. One of 12 children, Don was the last survivor of the large Smith clan. He moved his family to South Carolina in 1966 to “get away from that Appalachian cold”.
Don was married to his childhood sweetheart, Virgina DeBord Smith, also a native of Saltville, VA, for 62 years prior to her death in 2012.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Patricia L., Patti, Smith of Columbia as well as numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in law and way too many friends to name.
Don was a magnet to everyone he met - young, old and four legged. He loved the Lord, Platt Springs UMC, his family, both blood relatives and adopted-by-love family, his best buddy Patti and his little cat PJ. He will be missed by everyone he touched, but above all by Patti.
Heartfelt thanks to Prisma Health Hospice Care and especially to his two angels who were with him to the end, Wendy Dennis and Charmaine Dreher.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, December 6, 2021, at Platt Springs United Methodist Church with entombment to follow at Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Platt Springs United Methodist Church, 3215 Platt Springs Road, West Columbia, SC 29170 or a humane charity of one’s choice.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.caughmansouthland.com for the Smith family.
