Cecil was born in Atalla, Alabama on October 12, 1912 to James Amos and Nancy Margaret Hayes Amos. He was raised and educated in Gadsden, Alabama. On August 3, 1937, Cecil married Flora “Belle” Leeth. In the early years of their marriage, he worked in the oil fields of West Texas. Later they established their home in Texas City, Texas where he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years and sang in the choir. Cecil worked as a Pipe Fitter/Fabricator at Hoover Fabricators, Inc. in Texas City. He was a 50 year member of the Union 211. Cecil retired in 1978 at which time he and Belle moved to Visalia where he began his second career as a grape rancher, retiring in 2011. Cecil was a member of the Woodland Drive Baptist Church since 1978 where he served several years as Deacon in the church. His faith in God was of utmost importance to him throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball and fondly remembered playing baseball as a young man. Cecil was an avid gardener and raised tomatoes and vegetables for many family members and friends. He looked forward each spring to helping his great grandchildren plant their garden in Athens, Texas. He will be greatly missed by his daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Cecil was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Belle in 2002 and his son, Cecil Wayne Amos in 2004.
He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Lucy Amos of Athens, TX; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Amos (Todd Brooks) of Laguna Beach, CA, Michelle Edwards (Jon) of Athens, TX, Bryan Amos (Sarah) of Dallas, TX, and Brent Amos (Merina) of Visalia, CA; nine great grandchildren and one on the way.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 from 3 – 7 p.m. at Miller Memorial Chapel, 1120 W. Goshen Avenue in Visalia. Funeral services will be held at the Woodland Baptist Church on Wednesday February 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Visalia District Cemetery.
