Obituary of Virginia "Ginny" Crofford Zaun
Virginia “Ginny” Zaun passed away August 13th, her daughters by her side. Born in 1932 in Waukegan, IL, she was the daughter of Horace Calvin and Teresa Allen Crofford, who moved to Norfolk, VA, in 1942. Virginia graduated from Maury High School in 1950. She married John Beverly Zaun in 1952 at the Christian Temple in Norfolk, and in 1960, the family moved to Kempsville. She attended the Norfolk Division of William and Mary before working for the Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation, where she was honored as “Miss HRPE.” She served on the staff of Congressman William Whitehurst and completed an Associates degree at Tidewater Community College. She spent many years working as secretary to the Captain of the Virginia Beach Police Department, where she dearly loved the detectives (“her boys”). She later retired from the City’s Planning Department. Virginia was an accomplished musician. She taught piano and served as organist at Emmanuel Episcopal, St. Andrews UMC, and Resurrection UMC in Virginia Beach. She was named a lifetime PTA member at Kempsville Elementary School in honor of her dedication as a volunteer. She was also a member of the Lynnhaven Parish Chapter of the DAR, the Tidewater Scottish Society, the Tidewater Gem & Mineral Society, the Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach Historical Society, and the ODU Institute for Learning in Retirement. She grew up in the Nazarene Church, and later attended Community UMC and First Baptist Church of Norfolk. She was predeceased by her husband John, her parents, and her brother Horace “Sonny” Crofford. Surviving are daughters, Teresa Austin and Holly (Clayton) Bernick; grandchildren: Adam Austin (Teresa), Justin Bernick (Christie), Joshua Austin (Beth), Leah Sumrall (John), Jonathan Austin (Becky), Reed Bernick (Bridget), and Andrew Austin (Katie); great-grandchildren: Mila, Charlotte, Daphne, Gavin, Ben, Edith, Margaret, and Annie; her sister-in-law Jean; and her beloved nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 20, followed by a brief graveside service and visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia or The Union Mission.
