IN THE CARE OF
Smith & Williams Funeral Home/Kempsville
Robert G. Brewer, MD passed away peacefully January 29, 2021, from
natural causes at age 95. He was born on April 12, 1925 in
Indianapolis, Indiana as the middle of three children. His sister, Betty
Reed, predeceased him, and his older brother, Scott Brewer, is still
going strong at 98+ years old. His parents were Scott Ridge Brewer
and Eda Bose Brewer. He was father to Robby Brewer, Laura Brewer-
Heilig, Susan Hammes, Megan Brewer (predeceased him in 2010 in
Alaska), Amy Brewer, Georgia “Gigi” Carr, and John Brewer, and was
stepfather to Scott Brown (predeceased in 2018), Daniel “Dusty” Brown,
Matthew Brown, and Todd Brown. He was also the grandfather to 21
grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
Robert lived in Indianapolis until 1933, age 8. His family then moved to
Louisville, Kentucky for a year, and then to Washington, D.C. in late
Spring, 1934. They resided in Bethesda, Maryland. He graduated from
Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1943, where he was a star
athlete in baseball, basketball and football. He joined the Army Air
Force after graduation. He served as a bomber pilot from 1943 –1945,
flying B-25 and B-26 bombers (stateside). He attended Hamilton
College, graduating in 1948, where he was also a star three sport
athlete. He married Doris Van Iderstine in 1949, and then obtained his
medical doctor degree from George Washington University in 1952.
After several years of internship and residency in and around
Washington, D.C., Robert began solo private practice as a surgeon in
the mid-1950s.
Robert married Donna Sharp in 1968. They had 3 children together and
moved to Virginia Beach in 1973. There, in addition to maintaining his
surgical practice, Robert also became a farmer (Brewer’s East Farm),
an office building developer (next door to the farm, where his office
was), a restauranteur (Brewer’s East Inn), and was the Kellam High
School physician for more than 20 years. Robert retired from his
medical practice in 2000. He was self-confident, never arrogant, always
pragmatic, incredibly hard-working, and genuinely friendly to everyone.
He prided himself on eating well, staying in shape, and leading a
healthy lifestyle. Clearly that helped his longevity!
Plans are being made for a small graveside service on April 10, 2021 at
1:00pm at Nimmo Methodist Church in Virginia Beach.
