Margaret Rose Homer Whitehurst, 83, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, passing peacefully at home with her family by her side. Originally from Avon, Illinois, Margaret was born April 3, 1939 and resided in Virginia Beach, VA for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis S. and Bernita O. Homer; sister, Mary Jean Homer; brother, Ronald D. Homer Sr., and her son Patrick R. Lundstrom.
Raised in the farming community as one of five children, Margaret graduated high school from Avon High School, class of 1957 and was instrumental in assisting organization of her class reunions, a task that she adored. Margaret worked for Norton & Ellis import/export brokers in Norfolk, VA for almost 20 years before deciding to become a homemaker. She was an avid reader and a talented seamstress who enjoyed many various types of crafting/sewing. Margaret was an excellent pianist, instilling the love of playing music in her daughter and was the pianist/organist for Beech Grove United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach for many years. Margaret was the family historian with a passion for genealogy and she also loved traveling, camping and playing cards.
She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Ira W. Whitehurst of Virginia Beach; daughter, Dr. Brenda W. Tuck (Dan) of Williamsburg, VA; step-daughter, Sharon W. Cone (David) of Lexington, SC; step-daughter, Lisa W. Smyth (Frank) of Ridgeville, SC; sister, Sharon D. (Colton) Tuttle of Kirksville, MO; brother, Craig L. Homer (Wanda) of Queen City, MO; grandson, Jesse W. W. Jones of Charles City, VA; grandson, William N. Ellis, III of Newport News, VA; grandson, Brian A. "Trey" Jones, III of Charleston, SC ; grandson, Brandon Jones (Jessica) of Summerville, SC; granddaughter, Dr. Jordan Cone of West Columbia, SC; granddaughter, Lauren Cone of Charlotte, NC and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive visitors at Smith & Williams Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm located at 4889 Princess Anne Road in Virginia Beach. Funeral services will be held at Smith & Williams Funeral Home on Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 2:00pm with interment to follow at Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach, VA. Memorial contributions may be sent to either the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad (740 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach VA, 23451) or to the Virginia Beach SPCA.
