John William Plummer was born May 22, 1931, in Westmoreland County, VA the youngest son and child of the late Moses A. and Martha A. Plummer. He was educated and graduated from county public schools. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Virginia State College (now University) where he served in the Reserve Officers Training Corps. He accepted a commission in the United States Army and served stateside as well as overseas in Europe and Asia. He was a Bronze Star recipient and earned several other military awards. He retired at the rank of Major, after more than 20 years of honorable and faithful service to his country. Post-service he worked in both government and private sector management positions including the US Postal Service before retiring from home business, Jo’s Delivery Service, Inc.
John married the love of his life, Josephine, and in loving care, raised and shepherded his six children.
At an early age John accepted Jesus as his LORD and Savior and continued to honor Him throughout his life. He modeled a godly life and along with his wife, served in various capacities and positions within the church including Leader, Teacher, and Deacon. He most recently served as Chairman of the Deacon and Diaconate Board, Men’s Ministry Fellowship, Male Chorus and Mass Choir Member, Sunday School Superintendent, Boy Scout Troop Leader, and as a driver for the Jo’Ann Ministry, at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, VA, of which he remained a member until his death.
He was a humble servant who quietly, steadily, and generously, touched the lives of others with wisdom, compassion, and giving. He loved God, people, humor, travel, photography, music, and sports. He loved his family very much. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was passionate about helping others.
John departed this life on December 18, 2022, and rests in the arms of his Heavenly Father.
Preceded in death were his parents and nine siblings, oldest daughter, Juanita A. McLaurin; loving wife, Josephine Mary Plummer; son, Steven A. Plummer (Tina), and dear friend, Mary Jones. He leaves to cherish his memory, son, Jesse J. Plummer; daughter, Rita M. Reid (Desmond); daughter, Lita R.P. Slaughter; son Baihr (Heather), grandchildren (Samson, Eboni, Jeté, Joshua, Chelsee, Desiré, Kodi, Joanna); great-grandchildren (Lucas, Langston, Malcolm, Calloway, Braysyn, Ysabella), and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family, our dear family care-giver Pat Turner, and friends.
