John Joseph Capozzoli, 91, passed away on January 7, 2022 at home with his loving family by his side in Virginia Beach, VA. He was born on June 23, 1930 to the late John and Mary (Colotta) Capozzoli in Paterson, NJ.
John retired with distinction as a Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service and worked for the Hawthorne, NJ office for 33 years. John or "Cappy" as most everyone knew him, worked for the Textile Piece Dyeing Company in Paterson, NJ before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1951 to serve in the Korean War. Cappy was honorably discharged as a Boatswain's Mate after serving four years. An entrepreneur at heart, Cappy offered custom stationary services and eventually operated his own classic offset and letterpress printing business, Manor Park Press in Hawthorne.
Cappy was a lifelong athlete, participating in roller derby, distance skating, baseball, and football and was an avid fan of all sports. He was a football official and a baseball umpire for many organizations and was instrumental in the formation of the Cubs Youth Football Association in Hawthorne, NJ. Throughout his life Cappy mentored numerous young athletes as a baseball coach in New Jersey's Suburban League and the National Adult Baseball Association of Tidewater, Virginia.
Cappy lived most of his younger years in northern New Jersey, residing on Frederick Avenue in Hawthorne and later on Ryerson Avenue in Oakland. Cappy retired to Virginia Beach, VA in 1988 where he resided on Windy Pines Bend until his death.
Cappy is survived by his wife of 44 years, Christine Mary (Matthews) Capozzoli; sons Scott Capozzoli and his wife Susan, John Capozzoli and his wife Svetlana, daughters Cindy Capozzoli, and Kim (Capozzoli) Eletto and her husband William "Bill", stepson Russ Zito and his wife Laura, stepdaughters Susanne (Zito) Bass and her husband Brian, Jo Anne Zito, and his twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He is preceded by his parents John Lewis and Mary (Colotta) Capozzoli; his first wife Joan (Valle) Capozzoli, sons-in-law David Brown and Jeremy Gigowski, and his grandchildren Brandi Sue Capozzoli and Joseph Duane Capozzoli.
Cappy was certainly the life of every party, he befriended all who met him and truly did it "His" way.
