Edith Dozier Newbern

Edith Dozier Newbern, 95, passed away Dec. 11, 2015. She was born May 11, 1920 in Currituck County, NC to the late Phillip and Lula Dozier.
Edith worked many years at McKinney’s Grocery Store in Oceana. She continued a career with Virginia Beach City Public Schools where she worked as a school crossing guard at Cooke Elementary School and as a school bus assistant until her retirement in 2007.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Carl H. Newbern. Left to cherish her memories are her son, Columbus Cartwright and his wife Phyllis of Lexington, VA; her daughter, Marsha Newbern of South Mills, NC; her sister, Lillie Louise Basnight of Va Beach; her brother, William C. (Mickey) Dozier of Moyock, NC; grandsons, Randolph Cartwright and Major Benjamin Cartwright; great-grandsons, Tyler, Connor, and Ethan Cartwright; and many loving nieces and nephews.
We are eternally grateful for the loving care and compassion given to Edith by the entire staff at Atlantic Shores.
The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00 p.m., Sat. Dec. 19, 2015 at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home with a funeral service starting at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Virginia Beach SPCA in Edith’s memory.
