Jose had a very successful and illustrious 32 year (1971-2003) career at Union Carbide. He worked mainly within Carbide Unipol Licensing, working and consulting with the many Unipol Licensees worldwide. He was passionate about his job and coworkers. His dedication was second to none and his team-effort approach was his signature. His management style, leadership and charismatic personality paved the way for his success in his many work roles and projects he led. His work took him to many worldwide locations including;
1971 - Began his UCC Seadrift and worked as Dept Head at LP1
1975 - Belgium for a HP Start-up
1979 - Returned to UCC Seadrift and worked as a Dept Head at LP1
1981 - Chief Commissioning Engineer at the Bahia Blance, Argentina Barge project
1984 - Chief Commissioning Engineer at Mobil project in Beaumont, TX
1986 - Chief Commissioning Engineer for the Yanpet (Mobil) project in Saudi Arabia
1987 - Unipol Licensing Manager
1990 - LM/Chief Commissioning Engineer for the Propilco St-Up in Cartagena, Colombia
1996 - Plant Manager at Kuwait site
1999 -Returned to UCC Seadrift as Unipol Licensing Manager
2003 - Retired from UCC
2004-2010 Contracted with PP and PE Licensees
2013-2018 Worked with W.R. Grace in Victoria
Jose’s UCC Career was after obtaining his engineering degree from Texas A & I, enlisting in the United States Marine Corp. achieving rand of 2nd Lieutenant and serving in Vietnam.
Jose is survived by his son, Gerardo Vara; grandchildren, Aries Vara, Corbin Devera and Brianna Devera; sisters, Maria de los Angeles, Blanca estela, Ana Margarita, Maria Guadalupe, Maria Del Carmen; brothers, Herberto Vara-Munoz and Rogelio Vara-Munoz.
In addition to his parents, Jose was preceded in death by his wife Sulema C. Vara on November 20, 2022; sister Blanca Estela and two brothers, Hector and Julios C.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation from noon until two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday the 20th of January with a Celebration of Life and Rosary to begin at two o’clock at Rosewood Funeral Chapel. Military honors under the auspices of the Victoria Veterans Council will be conducted at the conclusion of the memorial service.
