Evelyn Lucille Harrison departed this life Friday, July 13, 2018 at 7pm, after having had a massive stroke on July 7, 2018. She spent several days at Citizens Hospital but could not overcome the stroke and pneumonia. She was moved to a wonderful and peaceful place, Dornberg Compassion Center, a part of Hospice of South Texas, where she stayed Thursday night. This was a beautiful setting for her passing.
Evelyn was born in Eagle Pass, Texas, the youngest of five children (Josefina, Angelina, Elizabeth, and Mae were her older sisters). She attended school in Del Rio, Texas. She met her husband, Robert Byrd Harrison, Jr. and married in 1942 in Corpus Christi, Texas. She told the story of them going there on a bus with one suitcase between them. Robert worked in the oil fields and Evelyn worked for the telephone company. They moved to Sinton, Alice, Falfurrias, and Robstown for his work. Their daughter, Bobby Sharon, was born in Robstown in 1944. After tiring of moving around, the family settled on a farm in Three Rivers, Texas. After several years of farming, there was a drought and he had to sell the farm. They then moved to Bloomington, Texas, and Robert became a carpenter. They became a part of the community and Evelyn got a long-time job at a grocery store. They lived in Bloomington until Sharon graduated and married, and then moved to Victoria.
Two grandchildren were born, Melissa and Holli, and they were a big part of their lives. In Victoria, Evelyn began her career at Bealls Department Store and did volunteer work. She later worked at Grandy’s and as a Demo person at various stores around town, which were perfect for her because she was such a “people person.” Robert passed away in 1996, and her great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Savannah were born in 2004 and 2006.
She leaves behind her daughter, Bobby Sharon Harrison Smith of Victoria; grandchildren, Melissa Consoli and her husband Andrés Consoli; Holli Addison and her husband DeWayne Addison; great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Savannah Addison. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Amanda Martinez Walmsley; husband, Robert Byrd Harrison, Jr.; sisters, Josephine Billings, Angelina Wilcox, May Wurz and Elizabeth Witty.
Friends and family will gather for a visitation to be held on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 10:00 a.m., Northside Baptist Church.
The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses who worked with mother. The wonderful people at Dornberg Compassion Center were a big help in her final days. They would also like to thank DeWayne Addison, Holli Addison, Melissa Consoli, Andrés Consoli, Olin Linke, and Eddie Harrison for being pallbearers at the funeral. Evelyn was a fun-loving person and will be missed by all.
