November 9, 1918 - July 30, 2021
Pamela, from Montreal, known as Merrill on the West Coast, passed away peacefully with her family by her side in Victoria BC after a short illness.
She was born at Curragh Camp, a British army base in Northern Ireland where her Canadian father, Walter Merrill, was stationed. When World War I was over, the family moved to Montreal where Pamela spent her early years, going to school at King's Hall in Compton, Quebec.
Merrill became a well known artist in Montreal and then later in Victoria. She studied at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, was a student of Max Beckmann and later worked with Hermann Heimlich at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She also held an Honours Certificate in Water Colours from the London Drawing Society in London, England. Her paintings are in private collections across Canada, in Paris, England, the USA, Mexico, New Zealand and Leningrad.
While living in Montreal, Merrill spent most of her summers at the family cottage looking out over the lower St. Lawrence River at Cacouna, Quebec. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing and teaching bridge well into her nineties.
Merrill was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Murray Cook, in 2017.
She is survived by her two children, Larry Peck (Nicky) and Lindy Farrell (Doug); Larry's children Andrew (Erin), Katie, Lara, Victoria and Serena; Lindy's children Nicholas (Alison) and Alison (George); Murray's sons Gregory (Florrie), Kenneth (Jane), and John (Maria); and nine great-grandchildren.
Merrill enjoyed her years at Carlton House very much and the family thanks the staff very warmly. Special thanks to Dr. Ted Rosenburg and his team for their medical support, and a sincere thank you to the staff at Amica Douglas House.
