Maureen grew up in the Blenkinsop Valley, the youngest member in a family of six children.
Maureen has always loved working with plants and flowers. As a child, Maureen helped her family grow flowers to sell at the Victoria Market. As a teenager, Maureen was hired by Mrs. Brown of Brown's the Florist, who trained Maureen to be a floral designer. Maureen later became the dedicated manager of Mayfair Flower Shop and finally she worked alongside her older brother’s family, who owned and operated Marigold Nurseries. After “retirement” Maureen continued to enjoy working in her garden.
Maureen also loved music. She played piano as a child and, as a young woman, was a member of the Victoria Girls Drill Team, which performed in Canada, Oregon and California. As a member of the team and a longtime resident of Greater Victoria, Maureen was crowned Miss Victoria in 1949.
Maureen was interested in her family history and connected with her father’s family in England and then ventured to Northern Ireland to find her mother’s old homestead near Londonderry. After these adventures, Maureen began traveling to warmer locations, where she loved seeing the tropical flowers flourishing.
Maureen was also a friend to all animals, both wild and domestic, and in recent years would often be met by her many caring neighbours, while walking her little dog, Lily. Maureen was a kind and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her 2 sons, Paul (Julia) and Kerry (Lori); her 3 grandchildren, Kelly Grant (Mikey), Erin McComb (Geordie) and Michael Grant (Baljit); and her 7 great-grandchildren, Kaelum, Clover, Aidric, Eily, Malaya, Aaryan and Anisa.
Maureen will be missed by her friends and family, who will gather to celebrate Maureen’s life in the Spring, when the flowers are in bloom.
