Margery was born in Ottawa, Ontario.
She attended Carlton University and earned her Honours Bachelor degree in English in 1953. Margery also excelled in drama, art and poetry, winning multiple awards and scholarships. She took an active interest in politics and loved history. After graduation Margery studied for one year with Arthur Lismer (Group of Seven) at the Montreal School of Art with a focus on children’s art and teaching.
Margery married John T Gibson in Ottawa in 1956 and continued teaching part-time while raising their four daughters. In 1972 this city girl moved to a century farm in the Ottawa Valley with John and her family where they farmed until 2000. The farm inspired great art including a published book of exquisite poetry. She also mastered and produced a primitive African technique of low fired pottery. Margery’s vegetable garden was legendary and fed the family every winter.
In 1984 Margery returned to school attending Queens University in Kingston,Ontario, in the Artist in the Community education program and earned a second education certificate.
Margery and John moved west and settled in Victoria, BC in 2000 where she continued her painting and art and earned a masterclass certificate at the Victoria college of Art. Margery pursued, studied, produced, taught and promoted love of art with children and adults her entire life.
Love of God, Christian Science, church, family, children and her passion for art and books nourished her beautiful life, blessing each of us within her radius.
Margery is survived by her daughters Kate Gibson Oswald (Kevin), Emily Gibson, Allison Goldberg (Larry) and Beth Gibson. She is predeceased by her husband John T Gibson, her parents Arta Lois Herwig (McElhinney) and George Conrad Herwig and her brothers John David and Sydney Lucas.
She was a much loved grandmother to Caelin King (Eric), Jon Oswald and Breanna Corrigan and beloved “GeeGee” to her great grand-daughter Maeve King.
Margery Gibson cherished and inspired many people and she will be missed.
