19th, 2023. Born in 1932 near Creston, B.C., she grew up with 6 siblings, learning valuable life
skills on the family farm. At 20, she married school friend, Walter, the love of her life. First-born
Jim arrived, the couple moved to Victoria in 1954, then Kathy was born. Esquimalt was the
perfect fit for the growing family, as Eric, then Lorraine joined the roster. Ruby was a hardworking
mother, and with Walter, they frequently hosted family, friend or neighbour gatherings
in their home, moving 3 times in over 65 years within the municipality.
Esquimalt benefitted from the boundless energy of this community-minded couple, as they
gave leadership and countless hours to the Esquimalt Anglers, Softball, Scouts, PTA,
Buccaneer Days, and more.
Even before retiring from her Eaton’s buy-line job, Ruby joined Esq. Silver Threads,
volunteering with knitting, arts & crafts, and crib. She walked daily to her 5 a.m. swimming
ritual. She enjoyed being a sales rep for Watkins and Regal, extending her ever-growing circle
of friends. After Walter’s passing, she bought a new van, ecstatic to become car-pool driver for
regional crib meets and live theatre outings.
When she could no longer manage her Saxe Point home, she entered The Renaissance, saying
it was “her best move”. Many new friendships made, she continued to host gatherings, and
took part in activities there.
Pre-deceased by husband Walter, infant son Leonard; siblings, Ann, Sid, Jim, Hank, and
Sweyn. Survived by sister Jen; children Jim (Marilyn), Kathy (Glenn), Eric (Victoria), Lorraine
(Dave); numerous adoring grandchildren, great grandchildren; and cherished in-laws.
With phenomenal skills in knitting, needlework, and card-making, Ruby shared her talents
regularly. She was an avid joke-teller, excellent listener, reliable and trust-worthy friend,
stunning mother and grandmother, cherished forevermore.
Thank you to James and staff at The Renaissance; Dr. Asplin; Esquimalt Firefighters and
paramedics; the medical team at Royal Jubilee and Lifelabs; Pharmacist Faeza; and countless
others who offered compassionate care to beloved Ruby. You made the difference.
