Hilda passed away peacefully on September 17, 2022, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, B.C., at 98 years of age.
The devoted wife of Donald W. Stevens (pre-deceased) for 63 years, Hilda was a dutiful, caring mother to her children Anita, Mark, and Ron (pre-deceased). She was an adoring grandmother to her five grandchildren: Erica, Colin, Peter, Kyle, Earl.
Hilda was the last surviving child of English immigrants Charles Cundy and Nellie Turner. Her siblings George Cundy and Winifred Sellers predeceased her.
She was born at home in Regina, but in the Depression her family moved to Vancouver, following other Cundy and Turner siblings to British Columbia.
After marrying Donald in 1946, Hilda spent 28 years as a supportive Canadian army wife living at military bases across Canada and in Germany.
In retirement, Hilda and Don left Ottawa and fixed up a house in Victoria, and especially enjoyed travelling with her dear sister Win and brother-in-law Gordon Sellers.
She was a wonderful baker, keen gardener and staunch monarchist. Christmas was always a special time, with many precious memories shared around her table.
Ever a storyteller, Hilda would recall her growing years in tales filled with mischief and plenty of humour.
The family thanks the Sixth South Orthopedics Care Team at the Royal Jubilee Hospital as they treated Hilda in her final month. We also thank her caregivers at Parkwood Place in her last five years, and Jackie, who helped mom and dad for well over a decade.
A private family service will be held.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.firstmemorialsaanich.com for the Stevens family.
