Hazel is survived by her daughter Shannon (Liam), granddaughter Jordan, brothers Don Gordon and Rusty Gordon (Cheryl), and sister-in-law Denise Gordon.
Hazel was born on the Corbiell homestead in Cluny, Alberta, to parents Lynn and Marie Gordon. After finishing high school, Hazel attended the Holy Cross School of Nursing. She graduated in 1956 and commenced her nursing career. She married her childhood sweetheart Don Haggarty in 1958 and went on to have two children, Gordon and Shannon.
Hazel retired from nursing in 1995 in Kelowna, B.C., then moved to Victoria B.C. in 2000 to be closer to her daughter. In 2003, she became a grandmother.
Hazel dedicated her entire life to taking care of others and always putting others ahead of herself. That’s what made her such a great nurse, mum, and grandmother.
Being a grandmother to Jordan brought Hazel great joy. She was wonderful help when Jordan was a baby, participated in family traditions like Easter egg colouring, pumpkin carving and Christmas baking every year, and proudly followed Jordan’s academic and sporting pursuits.
Hazel could spend hours in conversation with family and friends, whether when back at the family farm in Cluny or chatting on the phone. She was not afraid to speak her mind …. and did so often. She was larger than life and had a very tough exterior. But, as everyone who knew her well knows, she was a kind compassionate soul who had the ability to find humor in every situation.
Hazel loved desserts (ice cream sundaes, in particular), chocolate and listening to country music.
Hazel’s family would like to thank the staff at Berwick Royal Oak who made mum’s stay pleasant and comfortable, and especially for the care and dignity they provided in her final weeks.
At Hazel’s request, there will not be a funeral service.
