Passed away peacefully and comfortably at Victoria Hospice in the early morning of August 6th 2018. Born April 26th, 1932 in Regina, Saskatchewan and predeceased by his parents Chester and Myrtle Dewhurst. Gerry is survived by his loving and caring family; his devoted wife of 60 years Jeannie Dewhurst, his sons Stacey Dewhurst (Sheila Gagne) and Michael Dewhurst, grandson Shafer Dewhurst, and daughter in law Linda Pucci (Jeff Mousley).
From an early age Gerry was a man of many talents and capabilities. In 1967 while working in Regina, Gerry was recruited by Standard Fine Furniture and shortly after the family relocated to Victoria. At the same time Gerry discovered a blossoming interest in real estate, and in 1969 he and Jeannie purchased a heritage mansion on St. Charles Street converting it into the very successful and prestigious Golden Manor Care Home.
In 1972 Gerry joined the Victoria Real Estate Board as a Realtor and began a successful career promoting the concept of condominium living, while at the same time working alongside the local development community. Later he began developing real estate companies on his own, starting by opening the first ever Re/Max franchise in Victoria, followed by the introduction of Sutton Group Real Estate, a business he developed into the largest real estate firm of the day.
Always a positive and supportive presence, Gerry was a forward thinker, a careful planner, and enjoyed developing business strategies, inventive concepts, and new ways to assist his staff and member Realtors. Recently Gerry received his 45 year service pin from the Victoria Real Estate Board recognizing a lifetime of service.
To all his friends, Gerry says thank you for all the wonderful memories, along with a special thanks to the Jubilee Hospital 8th floor south, and to the compassionate and committed angels at Victoria Hospice.
If so inclined, donations in Gerry's memory to Victoria Hospice would be appreciated.
