It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving mother.
Over the last 10 years our mother suffered much adversity. Her Husband Ernie passed away in 2013, she crushed her ankle from a severe fall and then she lost her daughter Lindsay during Covid Lockdown in 2021. She endured more than most people could bear. Debbie continued to be kind, a great friend to many and a loving NaNa to her three beautiful grandchildren. Known as 'Songbird Deb', she sang her whole life. Her husband Ernie and all her children had outstanding voices, and when living in Trail the family entertained and put on concerts. Debbie sang at weddings and events. She continued to sing when they moved to Victoria, entertaining seniors and singing with musical groups.
Debbie had a brief stay in the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria and passed away peacefully on May 3, 2023. Her children, Dustin and Jeffrey, spouses and grandchildren were by her side, as were her brother Richard, sisters Gerry and Connie. Debbie's loyal and devoted lifelong friend and guardian Angel, Gwen DeRosa was also present during her stay in hospital,
In 1979 Debbie married the love of her life Ernest Miles. Debbie and Ernie owned "Ye Flower Shoppe' in Trail BC and also lived in Calgary and Victoria. Debbie is survived by son Dustin (Carina Miles) and son Jeffrey (Lei Suntharee ) and three beloved grandchildren Aria and Hunter Miles, and West Miles. Brother Richard Van Tassel, Sisters Gerry Brown and Connie Hanson and Aunt Frances Doherty. Also survived by many relatives and cousins.
Debbie was predeceased by her parents Dolores and H. Norman Van Tassel (Trail BC), In-Laws May and John Miles (Victoria BC), Her loving husband Ernie and two daughters, Cora Lee (passed one day after birth) and Lindsay Miles at 37 years old, and her brother-in-law Ronald Hanson.
Debbie will always be remembered for her beautiful Angelic voice and her signature song 'Roses are Red my love'. She will always be our 'Songbird Deb' and is now singing with the Angels. We love and will miss you forever.
Deb's family would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and Staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Also a bouquet of thanks to our family and friends for their understanding and assistance during these difficult times. On behalf of our family thank you for your love and friendship for Debbie! In honor of Debbie, donations will be accepted by the Canadian Diabetic Association or Charity of your choice.
No Service will be held. First Memorial Funeral Services and Garden of Memories in Victoria, BC has been entrusted with arrangements.
