A few belated words about (Great) Uncle Alan. 

Matt and I were so blessed that he joined us to celebrate our wedding in Australia (30 March 2013). He travelled all the way from Canada with Jojo. It was so special to have them celebrate with us, especially in the absence of Grandpa Brian and Granny Jean. He was also very kind to Matt and I when we lived in London, lending us his car whilst he returned to Canada. 

Matt and I had always hoped to travel to Canada to visit him and my extended Matthews family. It’s a great shame that we never got that opportunity.

I will always remember Uncle Alan for his kindness and wonderful sense of humour! 

Rest in peace Uncle Alan.

I met this lovely man as an 11 year old girl, having just moved to Balcarres, Sask from England…. I continued to be in contact off & on for many years! Really regret that 
we lost touch in my late fourtys…:(:( More so realizing this lovely, funny fellow passed away so recently..:(:(Alan & Rosemary were the nicest couple!!!! They were good friends to my parents Jim & May for many years…..

Alanis fondly remembered by all our family who knew him as friend and doctor and my husbands colleague in the medical clinic in Nipawin,Sask. We shared our Brit background in northern England and the Brit sense of humour.Condolences to Janet,Sallie,Richard and families.He was a good egg!

We will always remember Alan for his enormous  generosity towards all of us in our earlier days as youngsters in England, and Rosemary too. In South Africa , with Brian and Jean, in England,  Peter and Sharmaine and their family and especially us in Australia , myself Tricia and my girls. We were so privileged to Alan’s company for  our family wedding and we were so fortunate to be able to spend wonderful happy times . Lots of love to you all 

Alan has always been attentive to the needs of others and generous in supporting them.  He was the sort of friend we all need, whether we admit it or not.
He was an argumentative old bugger, who did not give quarter when his views were challenged, and for this he is to be praised.
God speed old friend, you'll be sadly missed in this world and the angels will be wondering what the heck they've been landed with!

My deep condolences to the Matthews family.  I first met Alan in 1973/74 and over the years our relationship changed from patient, to employee, and on to friendship.  I like to think that no matter where our lives had taken us, that we would always have that bond.  He was truly one of a kind!! From his sometimes gruff voice and demeanor to the extreme kindness and commitment to someone in need, Alan was a force to be reckoned with, and I was on the receiving end of both of those traits!!
He will be very much missed by his family and friends.

So sad to hear of Dr. Matthew's passing .  Dr. Matthews was a wonderful and kind person and an excellent doctor.  He delivered my first born (1970) in Fort Qu'Appelle and I shall always remember his kindness and compassion.  So thankful he was my doctor..my sincerest condolences to his family 💕😥

Dear Janet, Sallie, Richard, and Families, 

This is such a difficult but inevitable time. I know you will miss your Dad, but you have so many wonderful memories.

We didn’t see your Dad often but those times we did were marked by his good humor, kindness and listening ear.

I am reminded of a time not that many years ago when my mother and I were invited, by Alan, to dinner in Cowichan Bay. Cowichan Bay is a lovely,  small community on Vancouver Island. 
Much to our surprise, at least 12 other people were also invited.
These turned out to be some of his friends from Victoria. They were mostly elderly and absolutely thrilled to be a part of such an outing. He had planned a delightful adventure for them.  He arranged for them to board a boat in Victoria, set up with all the amenities, and sail up the sound to Cowichan Bay where they were disembarked to a restaurant with a stunning view of the marina.

Alan had arranged all transportations and menus.  I remember being so impressed with his thoughtfulness. It was obvious he had a great desire to be a blessing to each person.  I remember the pleasure he displayed as he attended to each person to make sure they didn’t feel left out and got what they needed.

After we had eaten he ushered them down to the dock and on board for the journey home.  I have no doubt  that for all who were part of this adventure, this memory will last forever.

This is how I will remember him:  Concerned for others’ needs and always up for an adventure to share.

To the family of Dr. Alan Mathews
He was the doctor to many people in the Fort Qu'Appelle area.  Alan and Rosemary became friends to the Todd family and was everyone's doctor.  He delivered both of my sons at Balcarres hospital.  There will be many fond memories of him by a great many people.
My sincerest sympathy to all his family.

Alan - Uncle Alan (It seems a long time since I last called you that!).

You took life head up and full on. Frequently you wore us mere mortals through  to the very soles of our shoes.  Times with you were never, ever, dull.
We had blisteringly good fun, on occasion perhaps too much to drink and many, many laughs.

When Daddy fell desperately ill, it was you and Rosemary, dear Aunt Rosemary, who took the four of us into your home.  Daddy was only 42.
It was you and Rosemary who put us, Mummy, Gillian and me, back on our feet.

For all the great times, Thank You.
For looking after us, may God Bless You.

Alan, you will be sadly missed by many people, particularly your family.
I will miss our "get togethers" in the Lake District where you and Rosemary spent much of your young life, and married at St. John's Church, Bassenthwaite.
This continued for 70 years with an extended family.  Always great fun and happy memories.

Alan, despite you being a bit of a pain when you were growing up you became a fine man and I was proud to be your sister, albeit older than you! 
Thank you for all the wonderful holidays we had with you in Canada and for those we went on together in Europe, Australia and South Africa.
You will be very much missed

As Alan's  neice I was fortunate to spend a whole summer with the family when I was a student and they lived on the praries. Their hospitality and kindness was boundless. More recently Owen, my husband and Lawrence our son and I spent a wonderful summer on Vancouver Island and again the hospitality was wonderful. All of this was possible because of Alan's generosity (and Rosemary's) and his love of all his family. He visited us in the North of England many times and we will miss him enormously. He was also a tremendous support to my mother, his sister, over many years. Thank you and good bye. 

We will miss Alan and his frequent visits to Beverley ( less frequently recently).  As his niece I’ve obviously known him for several decades and we ( my family) and I have had a lot of fun with him over the years.  He was a fiercely loyal husband, father, brother, son and uncle and loved to gather the family around. 
We will miss you Alan, (?maybe not miss your “antics”!!) but RIP lovely man 


I will miss Allen a lot.
I had the opportunity to take Allen and his grandson (Jason) to visit his Daughter (Sallie) and son in law (Juerge) in Burnaby for Christmas 2019. Our hosts were lovely and the whole experience was Christmas magical. We even took in a Christmas musical. The attached photo was taken at the Bass Pro shop in Tswassen on our way over.
