Glenn Donald Hermanson BSc.Eng.(Civil), P. Eng, OLS, CLS

June 12th, 1932 - February 17th, 2024

In Loving Memory of Glenn Donald Waldeman Hermanson, who, at the age of 91 years, departed this world on February 17, 2024; leaving a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Glenn passed away peacefully, having spent the last few days surrounded by family.

He was proceeded by his parents Knut Hermanson and Alice Josephine (née Johnson) Hermanson, his son Grant, brother Ken and sister Delcia. Left to mourn: are his wife of 65 years, Gloria, sons Jeff and Glenn (Christa), grandsons Dallas and Quentin, granddaughters, Julia (Sam), Virginia (Ethan) and Anna (Jeppe) and three great-grandsons, Kaj, Robyn and Nohr.

He is survived by his sisters Nadine, Charlene, Linnea and brother David. As well as many nieces, nephews and cousins, who he kept in regular contact with until very late in his life.

Glenn, was born on a sunny Sunday evening, on June 12th,1932, in the town of Sioux Lookout, Ontario, to parents, Alice Hermanson (née Johnson) and (Knut) Ken Hermanson.

After completing Grade 11, Glenn attended United College in Winnipeg, and then was accepted into the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in June 1958. It was during these years, about 1955, that he met his future wife, Gloria Mascetti, and they married on October,18th, 1958. And have been married for the last 65 years.

Glenn, then returned to NW Ontario to work as an articling Land Surveyor, and received his commission as an Ontario Land Surveyor in June 1960. After a few years of a successful private survey practice, he moved to Winnipeg, first working for the CPR, and then taking a job as an instructor at the Manitoba Institute of Technology, (later renamed Red River Community College). He became the Department Head of Civil Engineering Technology, then Dean, and finally retired as Chairman of the College. He also, received his Canada Lands Surveyor commission, in 1981 and had a part-time private practice as an OLS in the Kenora, Ontario, area until 1989. In late 1989, Glenn and Gloria took early retirement from Red River College and moved to British Columbia, first to Duncan and then finally settling into Vernon in 1993. It could easily be said that Glenn ‘excelled’ at retirement.

Glenn was very active in sports. He Curled for 62 years. Played Hockey up until leaving university. Loved Swimming. He was an avid golfer, even getting his first hole-in-one at age 82, at his beloved Spallumcheen Golf Club. An active member of the Vernon Yacht Club for two decades, including participating in the sail boat racing season. Like his father, Glenn was a skilled carpenter, built two summer vacation cabins, and enjoyed the NYT's Crossword puzzles and playing Bridge.

In times of joy and sorrow, Glenn was a pillar of strength and a source of comfort for those around them. He often visited sick friends until the very end of their life and for many years worked and lead groups at AA helping people to overcome their excesses.

The legacy of Glenn lives on through his family members, and a scholarship at Kelvin High School, Winnipeg, in memory of his son Grant. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be directed to the Grant Hermanson Art Award.

A service to celebrate the life of Glenn will be held on February 27th, at 2 pm, at Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, Vernon, BC. A funeral service, and celebration of life, will occur at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, in Winnipeg, MB, at 2 pm, Friday, March 1st.
