The artist known by friends and admirers as “gauvin” passed from this world on October 8th, 2012 and his departure has left a void that will for many never be filled. Gauvin has been an artistic force set loose among us, forming and defining the cultural fabric of Ventura. He arrived here in the early ‘90s and immediately made himself known with his visual, musical, and poetical work and presence. And what a presence it was! His visual art is immediate, dark, humorous, and powerful in both its execution and impact. Gauvin’s performance art embodied his capacities for improvisation, poetry and song.
For Gauvin, life and art were obviously one, and all expression was prayer. Gauvin made Ventura his stage. He performed and created on the street, in the galleries, the coffee shops, at the ArtWalks… His life’s journey blessed all who knew him. He made his presence known, shared his unique gifts, and we’re all better for it.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Warren is survived by his mother Delphine Wright; brother Brian Wright; sister Tisa Wright and grandmother Ordeane Diggs. Warren also left behind a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A life celebration has been planned for Sunday, October 14th at 11:00 AM at the Bell Arts Factory at 432 N. Ventura Ave. Artworks by gauvin will be on display and available for sale following the celebration.
