Robert “Bob” John Gomez was born on January 27, 1937, in Santa Paula. He is one of six children blessed by the union of Luis and Dolores Gomez. Bob passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Monday, April 28, 2014, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Bob attended Santa Paula High School from 1952 thru 1954 lettering in baseball. All three years playing at such a high level he was selected to the Ventura County CIF Team. Bob graduated from Ventura High School in 1955. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served proudly on the US Navy Submarine "Seafox" as Electrician 2nd Class for four years.
After leaving the service, Bob started and successfully managed his own trucking and construction business for over 15 years. In 1975, he went to work for the Saticoy Lemon Association as a field manager traveling throughout California, coordinating Lemon harvests until his retirement in 2000.
Bob was an accomplished golfer actively playing for many years as a member of the Saticoy Country Club, and was a Third Degree level member of the Knights of Columbus Santa Paula Council.
Bob's beloved son, Navy Veteran, Robert Salvador Gomez, passed away in 1996. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Velasquez, Helen Gonzalez, and Carmen Gomez-Lee; brothers, Edward Gomez and Fred Gomez. Bob dearly loved his many nieces and nephews, always being there throughout the years to support them in every way he could. The family grieves Bob’s passing, “he will be truly missed.”
A Prayer Vigil will take place on Thursday, May 8, 2014, 7:00 pm, at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. A Funeral Mass for Bob will be held on Friday, May 9, 2014, 10:00 am, at Sacred Heart Church, 10800 Henderson Road, Ventura. Graveside services following will be for family members only at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, Ventura.
