Dr. Larry Anthony Calderon passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2018. He was born in Los Angeles, CA on July 29, 1950, to Helen and Antonio Calderon. Dr. Larry Calderon was raised in Santa Paula, CA attending the public schools, then continuing his education at Ventura College and later receiving his BA in Anthropology at UC Santa Barbara. He went on to achieve his Master’s Degree and Doctorate of Education at the University of Southern California.
Larry was a dedicated educator and considered an expert in strategic planning. He began his career as an elementary school teacher and worked his way up to becoming a Coordinator of Student Financial Services at Ventura College, an Assistant Dean of Los Angeles Student Services at L.A City College, a VP of Administrative Services as well as VP of Instruction at Oxnard College, President of Ventura College, President at Broward Community College in Florida, VP for Community and Government Relations at Nova Southeastern University, Florida as well as a Doctoral Professor. He later became a Leadership Coach with Achieving the Dream, Inc.
At the age of 66 he retired ….but not really. Larry moved to San Diego, CA to be closer to family but then decided to substitute for the Poway School District and also received his realtors license in which he planned to leverage his professional background and relationships with realtors in San Diego to establish a scholarship fund for those students that needed help with their student debt and other educational needs.
Larry’s favorite pastimes included fishing, riding his motorcycle, playing with his grandchildren, hiking, reading, writing and traveling.
Larry was previously married to Lila and through this union had daughter Melissa and son Michael. He is survived by Melissa; grandchildren, Nyomi, Michael and Lia; and brothers, Albert and Eddie. He is preceded in death by his son, Michael and parents, Helen and Antonio.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018, 2:00 pm, at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura, CA.
