Charles “Chuck” Sitton, Sr., 93, died peacefully Saturday, August 31, 2013, at home in Oak View with his wife Ruth and wonderful caregiver Archie by his side. Chuck was born July 6, 1920, in Elkhart, Kansas.
Chuck was an 85 year resident of Ventura County. He attended and graduated from Ventura High School where he was the All-County star quarterback. During WW II he served in the Navy in the South Pacific Theater as a gunner aboard ship.
Chuck had a long and successful career with the Ventura County Fire Department, having served as Battalion Chief in the cities of Thousand Oaks, Camarillo and the entire Ojai Valley, retiring in 1976.
His interests were varied. He was a bee keeper, an avid trout fisherman, card game player, camp cooking, and absolutely loved Country Western dancing with Ruth and anyone else that liked dancing. His life included contributions to the community as a member of The Optimist Club, Ojai Valley Community Church, The Boy Scouts of America, and the California State Old Time Fiddler’s Association, District #8, where he served as President. He and Ruth had a passion for teaching Country Western dance to church groups, retirement homes, and school students.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 72 years Ruth Alice Sitton; son and daughter-in-law Charles and Sally Sitton of Cougar, Washington; grandchildren, Mike Sitton (Heidi), Kim Sitton (Terry), Scott Sitton, Ron Sitton (Ulla), Carrie Sandell, Mike Adams (Kellie), Marie Patterson (Dave), Denise McMerrick and Will Liggett; great-grandchildren; Michael (Michelle), Emily, Andrea, Kayla (Chris), Erin, Brooke, Jackson, Terra, Sandis, Mia, Arno, Devin, Willie, Robert, and Breanne; great-great grandchildren, Jouquin, Joseph, Jacob, and Oliver. He was preceded in death by his father Charles and mother Rena; sister Marie; brother, G.B. “Buck”; and his youngest son Wayne Sitton.
Chuck will be remembered and most respected for being the rock and glue that held our family together in times of good and difficulty. His devotion to Ruth set the example of what a husband should be. His passing has left a void that will never be filled.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers, if you wish, may be made to the Widows and Orphan’s Fund (W.O.A.F.), c/o Ventura County Firefighter’s Association, P. O. Box 385, Camarillo, CA 93011.
