Our mother, Matilda Rose Buchi Baran, ascended into Heaven on December 13, 2012 to be with our Holy Father. Mom was born December 18, 1916 in Pendleton, Oregon to Adeline and Albert Buchi, along with her twin sister Adeline.
Matilda graduated from Vancouver High School in 1937 and from Marinello National School of Cosmeticians in 1938. She worked as a beautician in Portland and Vancouver for about 20 years. In 1959 she attended Clark College and then began a new career at Columbia Machine. She worked in their business office for 20 years, retiring in 1979.
Mom was a volunteer member in the Washington State Women's Motor Corp during WWII, from 1942 until 1945. She was trained at the Vancouver Barracks by the soldiers stationed there. She learned to shoot a rifle and drive an ambulance. Her job was to take patients to St. Joseph's Hospital as needed and to take residents to a safe location in case of an invasion.
Matilda was a member and officer in the Business and Professional Women's Organization in Vancouver. She mentored women entering the field of Business. She also was a long standing member in the Officer's Wives Club, for wives of former Military Officers.
Mom was a gift to our family that we will cherish forever. She taught us patience, kindness, forgiveness, love and the importance of friends and family.
Matilda is survived by her children: Charles and Kathleen Baran and Paul and Mary Baran, all from Vancouver. She also leaves her very special friends: Mackenzenie and Steve Daniels, Debbie and Tony Sahli and Sue and Alan McDonald.
Dad preceeded Mom's death on July 17, 2012, to prepare for her arrival and her 96th birthday on December 18, 2012. Mom was predeceased by her parents and sister Adeline.
The family extends a forever gratefulness and thank you to the staff at Merrill Gardens, where Mom lived; to Kaiser Permanente Hospice and Elfin Services. The care given was exceptional and Mom loved all of you.
Visitation will be December 19, 2012, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Vancouver Funeral Chapel, 110 E. 12th Street, Vancouver, WA 98660. Interment will be December 20, 2012 at 1:30 pm at the Vancouver Barracks Post Cemetery and the Memorial Service will be December 27, 2012 at 11:00 am at Vancouver Funeral Chapel.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Post 14, American Legion, 4607 NE St. James Rd., Vancouver, WA 98663, where Mom and Dad enjoyed Friday dinners and friendship with fellow Veterans, their families and the wonderful staff.
