My brother shared a memory with me several years ago that I would like to share with all of you.  It demonstrates the kind of family man and character that he was when he was young. He made many sacrifices as the eldest brother, to help take care of the family. I was really surprised when he shared these stories with me because I had never heard them before. 

Back when he was living in the village as a young man in Hoiping, times were tough and food was scarce during the war time in pre-Communist China, when China was at war with Japan. 
In the area of our family’s village, there was a pond that was privately owned, that had a stock of fish in it. 
It was private property, and obviously forbidden to trespass and fish from it. 
At the time, it was just my eldest brother, my second brother, and my mom at home. My dad was already in Canada working, and I was not born yet. The family and village was hungry because it was war-time, and one evening, my eldest brother decided to take the situation of family hunger into his own hands.
In the middle of the night one evening, he decided to go out to the pond, and fish for food. He managed to catch some fish, and brought them home to the family, and cooked up a divine meal.
My middle brother was so overjoyed at the delicious meal, that he bragged the next morning to some of the village neighbors. 
He ran around, telling everyone; “My 'goh-goh' caught fish last night! We had big fish for dinner!” 
He was so happy to have a good meal, that in his childhood innocence, he proudly shared with everyone else who was going hungry, that his big, strong, older brother, brought home an amazing catch of fish for the family.
Whether my eldest brother got in trouble or not for his deed being exposed, he was gracious enough to not say anything at the time, to protect his little brother.
This story shows that he really did take on the responsibilities of stoically being a family man from a young age. 


As I toured Spain with Chris and Marisa, we saw the wonders of the works of Gaudi, enjoyed the good food, the beautiful scenery of mountains and sea, I realized you made it possible.  
Despite your many traditional Chinese ways, you wanted your daughters to have the ability to be independent. Your insight to make sure not only the sons, but also the daughters obtained as much education as possible has afforded me the life I have today. 
Thank you, dad for all your sacrifices.  Most of all, I thank God for his love and grace, and your humility to accept Jesus as your Savior. I know now you are in heaven, a place with no pain or sorrow, and I will see you there some day


"Dai Kow" as I know him (big uncle #1) will be missed by his family and friends. 
Growing up, I remember him as kind, and his home welcomed me on the weekends when I visited. 
Eldest brother to my mom, father to my cousins, grandpa to many, great-grandpa too, and "big" uncle to me, and great-uncle to my sons, our family patriarch--a dedicated family man, was able to live a long, illustrious life (93!) in two continents, with a legacy of his offspring settling all across North America (and even Central America!) making an impact on the world in their own unique ways. 
We should all be so lucky to be blessed so. 

Rest in peace Dai Kow, you live on in our hearts and memories.

To my Dad:

Dad, it’s hard to believe you’re gone from this land.
It seems like only yesterday that I held your hand.

We really miss you and wish you would forever stay.
But you planned and made another appointment that day.

To reunite with Ed, Julie and Mom, whom we also miss.
Now you can spend endless time together with them in bliss.

We will join with you one day and be together.
And once again, be happy, as one big family forever.
