She was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and during her life also lived in Sarnia, Ontario; Edmonton, Alberta; and Vancouver, BC. Gail made many friends and was known for her kindness, warm smile, delightful nature and zest for life. She was a creative, unconventional thinker, with a great sense of humour and a wonderful laugh.
In her younger years Gail was a teacher and later become a talented artist after moving to Vancouver. A very spiritual person, she was fortunate to find a lovely, like-minded spiritual group in Vancouver that she regularly met with.
She had two daughters – Jill and Pam—but was sadly predeceased in 2007 by Pam. Pam gave her two granddaughters—Stephanie and Jennifer—who are grown and now live in the Fraser Valley. Stephanie is the proud mother of Anderson and Lila—Gail’s great-grandchildren. Gail is survived by her sister, Sharon Norman, and brother Ken Johnson, both of whom were with her at the end. She also leaves behind her former husband of 45 years, Doug Chivers.
We'd like to thank Pat Barry and all the staff at Purdy Pavilion for their loving care during her years there. She shone there under their attentive support and also attracted a loving circle of friends among the patients.
There will be a Celebration of Life at the Arbutus Club in September and a smaller service at the Purdy with family and hospital friends. Invitations will be sent out closer to the date. Donations may be made to the Purdy Pavilion at UBC Hospital, where Gail stayed. Please direct this donation to the benefit of the residents of Purdy One in the Purdy Pavilion at UBC Hospital.
