Dec. 19, 1932 — June 10, 2019
For those who knew and loved him, every day was a TGIF (‘Thank Goodness it’s Foogie’) Day. His friendliness to all who crossed his path, thoughtfulness and willingness to serve, and especially his sense of humour and genuine interest in others drew people instantly to Foogie — from his early days at Vancouver’s Strathcona Elementary School and King Edward High School through his tenure in the restaurant and hotel industry to his volunteer work at Tenth Church, where he cooked meals for those in need and cared for many children, who he befriended with his playfulness and warmth. Foogie (few called him Harold) loved picnics in Stanley Park, sports, and being with family and friends — entertaining them with his genuinely funny and sage outlook on life.
Foogie’s caring nature and trademark one-line zingers were still in play during his last days at VGH, where he was surrounded by family and friends. He will be greatly missed by his wife Beverley; daughters Shelley (Cory) and Carolyn Wong; grandsons Matthew (Angela) and Mikhail (Alyssa) Tesarski; great-grandsons Charlie and Eddie; sisters Dorothy Kang and Wanda Lee; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Foogie was predeceased by his four brothers — Danny, Alfred, Walter, Clarence — sister Ella and niece Dr. Terry Kang.
Service on Saturday, June 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Tenth Church, 11 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stoke Foundation or your favourite charity.
“We are changed now, not because he left us, but because he touched us.”
