Born in Canton, China on February 1920, Fong Foo Chow immigrated to South Africa when she was 20 years old.
While in Johannesburg she met Sun Chow and a romance blossomed and they were married in 1941. They started a retail business in Newclare and ran it very successfully for many years. During this time the Chow family grew with the arrival of Mason, Wingson, Robert, Ivan and Jeanette. Her children were her pride and joy and her greatest love was for her family. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother to her children and was always there when needed.
In 1985, she and her husband Sun Chow emigrated to Canada where she joined the rest of her family. This brought her great joy to be reunited with her family and see all her children together again.
She was most excited to watch her 13 grandchildren finding their soul mates, getting married and starting their own families. She was extremely proud to be a mother, grand mother and great grandmother and see the arrival of 18 great grandchildren and knowing that there will be a great grand daughter arriving in September. Any time she was depressed or down, just a mention of her great grandchildren would bring a big smile to her face.
Her favourite pastime was spent playing mah jong with friends and family and she had lots of fun doing this activity. She also used to look forward to going to dim sum and dinners with her family. It was an outing she enjoyed and often complained that she over indulged because she loved her food so much. At home she loved to watch Chinese Soap Operas on TV, especially some of the older black and white movies.
