She was a caring daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother dedicated to loving and supporting her family and friends.
Carol was born December 30, 1945, in Toronto, Ontario, to Jacquelyn Dane (nee Hawley) and George Dane. Growing up in Toronto’s High Park neighbourhood with her sister Lea, she attended high school at Humberside Collegiate.
As a young teenager diagnosed with scoliosis, she was influenced by a lengthy hospital stay and became a registered nurse after graduating from Saint Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1968. Throughout her life, she was proud of this accomplishment and deeply valued the lifelong friendships she made in nursing school.
1968, she married Lloyd Armstrong in Toronto and had two daughters, Meredith and Laura. They settled in Ottawa to raise their family. Carol eventually left nursing to join Lloyd in running their fire protection and security business. This venture ignited Carol’s entrepreneurial spirit, and she started her own event rental business.
Carol had a lifelong passion for arts and culture. She became president of the Friends of the National Gallery of Canada, a volunteer organization devoted to the appreciation of art and the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. During her tenure, the organization completed its largest fundraising project, raising money to reconstruct the historic Rideau Convent Chapel within the walls of the new National Gallery of Canada building, which opened in 1988. Carol also volunteered at Vancouver’s VanDusen Botanical Gardens and Christ Church Cathedral.
Carol was a loving mother to her daughters. She moved to Vancouver in 2007 to be a part of their lives in British Columbia, a gift Meredith and Laura are grateful for. Carol was a compassionate caregiver, always ensuring elderly relatives felt included and valued. She was devoted to caring for her mother, Jacquelyn, who passed away shortly after they moved to Vancouver.
In 2010, Carol was thrilled to become a grandmother to Arleigh and then Archer in 2016. She loved the joy they brought to her life. “Grandma Carol” could be counted on whatever the circumstances and always had a thoughtful treat for her grandchildren.
Carol is survived by her daughters, Meredith Kemp (nee Armstrong) and Laura Fox (nee Armstrong), and son-in-laws Todd Kemp and Jesse Fox. Grandchildren Arleigh Kemp and Archer Fox. Her sister Lea Olson (nee Dane), her two nephews, and their families.
Donations in Carol’s honour can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
