Johan Frederik (Joop) van Olden, 97, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, April 7, 2022 at his home in Rancho Cucamonga. He was born November 20, 1924 to Albert Johan and Catharina (Dumas) van Olden in Surabaya, East Java, Dutch East-Indies now known as Indonesia. Johan spent almost 3 years of his life in a Japanese internment camp until his release in 1945. In Surabaya he met and married Aagje Algra July 19, 1950. They were married for 71 years. Johan is the last “van Olden” from his generation in this country and will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and his brothers Albert Everhard van Olden, William Rudolf van Olden, Willem Paul van Olden, Victor Hugo van Olden and sisters Dorothea Johanna van Olden (Buur), Ida Geertruida van Olden, and Fredérique Henriette van Olden (Macaré). Due to the politics of the time, the family looking for a safer and also better life, left Indonesia with three kids in tow for the Netherlands August 23, 1954 and settled there. Not satisfied, they now, with four kids in tow, decided to immigrate again but to the United States of America. Arriving in New York City July 31, 1959, then finally settling in Southern California. There they raised their six children. He is survived by his daughter Sylvia Maria (Nancy Garrison) van Olden, son Hans Albert (Sandy) van Olden, daughter Joan Catharina (Mike) Tynes, son Rene Alexander (Annette †) van Olden, son John Frederick (Adriana div) van Olden and son Mark Anthony (Lisa div) van Olden and many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Like Aagje, Johan loved them all. He also had many, many friends, mostly from the old days when they both lived in Indonesia. Because of travel, he became fluent in three languages, Bahasa Indonesia, Dutch and English. In the Netherlands and the USA, I remembered him learning how to speak English from a paperback book. The family moved to several different locations while in Southern California; when we first arrived in the states it was in downtown Los Angeles, then Pasadena, Valinda, Riverside and finally Rancho Cucamonga. Johan and Aagje loved this country and were true patriots; they became naturalized citizens on November 20, 1985. Both were avid travelers and enjoyed the great outdoors and in later years made regular trips to Las Vegas and Laughlin, Nevada to play the slot machines. When not playing the slots, his other hobbies were working on his car, collecting knives and crafting small wood objects and pieces of furniture. He will be missed.
