Our beloved mother and sage matriarch, Billye Jo Brouse, passed into eternity Wednesday, April 17, 2024. She will be greatly missed. She was our family’s source of encouragement and support, solace, wisdom and unwaveringly love. She cherished each and every one of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren beyond measure. No one who met Billye Jo could forget her sparkling personality and her beautiful smile. She engaged people with a generous conversational style that warmed people’s hearts and made them feel important and seen. She made friends easily and was loved by all who knew her. This truly was her super power.
Billye Jo was an avid reader and an amateur lexicographer. She pored over the weighty subjects of philosophy, politics and French language always recording arcane words and concepts for later review. A true autodidact and philomath, her curiosity about all things literary was insatiable.
Billye Jo was born on April 27, 1928 in Snyder, Texas, a ranching/farming community, to James and Lilla Raney. In 1943, at the height of WWII, the Raney family moved to San Diego, CA seeking work in the burgeoning industries supporting the war effort. There, Billye Jo attended Point Loma High School, graduated and shortly there after married the “love of her life” Richard Oliver Brouse, a sailor in the US Navy. Their marriage was truly made in heaven. They raised four children together and remained blissfully happy and in love for 75 years.
Billye Jo was proceeded in death by her husband Richard Oliver and is survived by her four children: Linden Brouse, Laura Brouse-Thomas, Ellen Brouse, Amy Brouse-Smither, her four grandchildren: Julie Duke-Martin, Kelly Mattocks, Alex Haseltine, Sarah Becker and seven great grandchildren: Sophia Mattocks, Grace Mattocks,
Ava Duke-Martin, Ronan Duke-Martin, Grayson Becker, Olivia Haseltine and Noemi Haseltine as well as several nieces and nephews.
Billye Jo will be interred at the Riverside National Cemetery in California where her cremated remains will be place in the columbarium with her beloved spouse, Richard Oliver.
