James Dale Obuch Sr. “Jim”, was born on September 10, 1938, to James and Brenice in Morgantown, West Virginia. Jim spent his childhood growing up with his younger brother Bill, his mother Brenice, and beloved stepfather Denver Jones. He graduated from Morgantown High School in 1956 and shortly thereafter enlisted in the United States Air Force.
Jim completed basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX, after which he was stationed at Scott AFB, Belleville, IL. There he met the love of his life, Judy Bingheim. After a brief four-month courtship, they were married on June 4, 1960. His Air Force career took him and Judy to Pope AFB, Fayetteville, NC, and Craig AFB, Selma, AL, as well as deployments for Jim to Korea and Okinawa, Japan. He retired from Randolph AFB, Universal City, TX, in 1976 after a twenty-year career holding the rank of MSgt. After his military career, he worked at JANA and Cartotech until fully retiring in 2001.
His mother Brenice often shared the story that Jim, as a child, always dreamed of going to Texas. Jim and Judy fulfilled that dream and set roots in Schertz, TX, in 1976. Together they shared a beautiful sixty-year marriage. They were adventurous and enjoyed spending time together. Jim and Judy could be found in Gruene listening and dancing to live music. They frequented Port Aransas, sitting by the ocean and indulging in an occasional beer at Shorty’s. Both cheered for the San Antonio Spurs and Judy tolerated Jim’s love of NASCAR. He had a passion for NASCAR, with his all-time favorite driver being Dale Earnhardt Sr. and a close “Second” being Kevin Harvick. He loved attending races at Texas Motor Speedway. They enjoyed going to casinos together, especially their trips to Winstar. They loved their road trips to see family. Jim and Judy enjoyed bowling and were members of the local Elks Lodge, holding several positions of leadership.
Jim and Judy had four children, Sharon, Lynn, Jimmy and Donny. He was a dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather. When the children arrived, Jim spent his time coaching sports and mentoring them in life. As the children grew and had families, he attended the events of the grandchildren, everything from sporting events to band concerts to dance recitals. Jim had an infectious sense of humor. He was a jokester and had the gift of making people laugh. Jim loved political banter and was not afraid to share his thoughts and opinions. He was very honest and genuinely fun to be around. Jim was loved by all.
Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife Judy, his parents, Denver and Brenice Jones, and his brother Bill Jones. He is survived by his children: Sharon (John), Lynn (Jeff), Jimmy (fiancé Tricia), Donny (Gladys).
