Eugene (Gene) William Somogyi, age 69, of La Vernia, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, June 7, 2021, from natural causes. He was surrounded by his loving family, and will forever be remembered for his outgoing personality, infectious smile, caring and loving spirit, and his unbelievable love of family. Born on November 10, 1951 in Sussex, New Jersey, Gene was the son of Michael and Evelyn Somogyi. He was a graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School and of Southwest Texas State University. While his friends called him Gene, his greatest honor was being lovingly called Pa-Pa by his two rays of sunshine; his granddaughters Juliana and Jenavieve.
Gene had a heart the size of Texas; he was kind, caring, compassionate, was an unbelievable mechanic and problem-solver, and was the best husband, Dad, Pa-Pa, hero, and friend any family could have hoped for. A Vice President in the banking industry for most of his career, Gene was never one to shy away from adventure. He loved traveling the county in his RV while scouting for new camping locations, riding his favorite motorcycles through the backroads of Texas, ziplining, and even playing video games with his son and granddaughters. Gene lived life to the fullest; he had a passion for cars, was a skilled auto and motorcycle racer, loved working with his family on DIY home-improvement projects, enjoyed spending time with loved ones, and adored watching the sunrise from his back porch with his morning coffee. Gene positively-impacted everyone and everything around him, and this world is worse-off without him. His amazing smile, giving spirit, and charismatic personality will be missed forever.
Gene is survived by his wife, Robin Somogyi; his son, Jonathan Somogyi; his brother Michael Somogyi; his daughter-in-law, Regina Somogyi; his granddaughters, Juliana and Jenavieve Somogyi; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A memorial service to celebrate Gene’s life will be held at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at Colonial Funeral Home - 625 Kitty Hawk Road, Universal City, Texas. Visitation hours will be 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM. A memorial has been established in Gene’s name for the American Heart Association.
