Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Lieutenant Colonel Dino Murphy enjoyed the adventures of growing up in a military family, including living all across the world. He is the third generation of his family to serve in the Army Medical Department (AMEDD). LTC Murphy served in the U.S. Air Force for two and a half years before transferring to the Green to Gold Army ROTC program. While a college student, he simultaneously served with the 111th Air Defense Artillery of the New Mexico National Guard. In 1990, following graduation from Eastern New Mexico University, he was recognized as a Distinguished Military Graduate and was commissioned in the Medical Service Corps. LTC Murphy has completed a total of five degrees from civilian institutions, culminating with his PhD in Health Service Management from La Salle University. His military education includes the AMEDD Officer Basic Course, Airborne School, Combat Casualty Care Course, AMEDD Officer Advanced Course, Personnel Management Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Command and General Staff College, and AMEDD Executive Skills Course.
His initial assignment was as Treatment Platoon Leader, Medical Battalion, 193d Infantry Brigade, Panama. In this position, coming soon after "Operation Just Cause," he was very involved with Nation Building activities, and various other Medical Operations throughout Central and South America. He completed his service in Panama as the Adjutant/ Public Affairs Officer at Gorgas Hospital.
LTC Murphy was then selected to work for The Office of the Surgeon General, managing all aspects of Army Healthcare Recruiting for much of Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri. When the AMEDD recruiting mission was transferred to the United States Army Recruiting Command, he continued to serve as the Team Leader and Recruiter for the same geographic area, including responsibility for an additional five recruiting offices. He was named the Top Recruiter in recognition for his unmatched productivity.
After completing his doctorate, LTC Murphy served as the Administrator for the Department of Medicine, Dermatology, and Pediatrics at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), San Antonio, Texas. After completing this important staff position, he was selected to serve as the Company Commander for B Company at BAMC.
Following successful Company Command, LTC Murphy was selected as the first 70F, or Health Services Human Resources professional, for the highly-competitive Training with Industry (TWI) leadership development program. After a successful educational and professional experience with the Baptist Health System in San Antonio, he was assigned to West Point, New York for his utilization tour to capitalize on his expertise. At West Point, LTC Murphy held dual roles as the Chief of the Human Resources Directorate at the hospital, and as the Medical Service Corps Branch Representative at the Department of Military Instruction, United States Military Academy
LTC Murphy's next important assignment was as the Executive Officer to the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel at Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC), Honolulu, Hawaii. His success in this challenging tour led to his selection to serve as Deputy Commander for Administration/Chief of Staff at Dunham Army Health Clinic at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. Due to LTC Murphy's accomplishments in this position, he was selected to serve as the Commander of Baumholder Health Clinic, Germany, responsible for all aspects of health care for the Baumholder military community. LTC Murphy was an integral part of the pre- and post-deployment requirements for the 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Nineteen months into this Command he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was sent to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., where he was assigned to the Warrior Transition Unit.
LTC Murphy earned numerous awards and recognitions, including: The Legion of Merit, Order of Military Medical Merit, seven Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, the Air Force Commendation Medal, five Army Achievement Medals, and Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. He also earned the German Soldier Proficiency Badge in Gold.
LTC Dino Murphy was married to the former Marilyn Ann Ward for nearly 27 years. They have three wonderful children. Michael is an attorney. Alyssa is a junior in college. Lauren is a freshman in college.
LTC Murphy loved God, family, friends, country, and everything about life. His church home was Brethren in Christ, in Carlisle PA.

He was born May 16, 1965, in Frankfurt, Germany. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Ward) Murphy; his son, Michael Murphy; his daughters, Alyssa and Lauren Murphy; his father, Rollie Murphy; his mother, Luciana Murphy; his brothers, Vincenzo and Marcello Murphy; his sister, Nancy Murphy-Bowles; and all their loving families; parents in law, Ray and Helen Ward of El Paso, TX
Dino enjoyed the adventures of growing up in a military family and living all over the world. He graduated from Andress High School in El Paso, Texas, in 1983. He then married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Marilyn (Ward) Murphy, a year later. Together, they moved to Andrews, Texas, where he worked and went to college. In 1986, he attended college part-time and enlisted into the Air Force. In 1988, he went into the New Mexico National Guard while completing ROTC at Eastern New Mexico University. Upon graduation in 1990, he went into the Army Medical Service Corps where he enjoyed a meaningful and adventure-filled career. He served in many diverse assignments and had a tremendous passion for taking care of and leading Soldiers. His awards included the Legion of Merit, Order of Military Medical Merit, seven Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, one Air Force Commendation Medal, five Army Achievement Medals and a sundry of other medals and recognitions.
His formal education included five degrees culminating with a Doctorate in Health Services Administration from La Salle University and a Masters from the University of Oklahoma. He completed many courses with the military. Of those, the most notable was Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. For many years, Dino volunteered with the Red Cross in many positions of responsibility.
Dino was commanding a Health Clinic in Baumholder, Germany, when he learned he had pancreatic cancer and returned to Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He refused to let this challenge his faith and fought the cancer with all the energy and prayer he could. This challenge was shared by all who knew and loved him. He greatly appreciated all their prayers and support.
Dino loved his family, friends, and church. He enjoyed all aspects of living. He was so proud of his children. He enjoyed the outdoors, the simple things in life, traveling, and riding motorcycles. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held from 9-12am on Dec.3, 2010 at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Road, Universal City, TX 78148. Burial will follow with full military honors at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
