Mary C. Caha, 85 of Union, NJ, went to be with God yesterday November 2, 2022. She was a faithful, kind and warm soul whom was loved and respected by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She will truly be missed.
It was in Newark, NJ on March 6, 1937, that the late William J. Halpin and Margaret C. (Mulcahy) Halpin welcomed into the world their only daughter, Mary., At an early age Mary, her older brother Bill, and their parents moved to Union, NJ, a place Mary called home for the rest of her life. Mary was part of the first graduating class of Newark State College, what is now known as Kean University, receiving her degree in 1958. From 1958 to 1959, Mary taught at the Connecticut Farms Kindergarten. While Mary only spent a short time at Connecticut Farms, it was a time that left a big impression on her. Following her teaching position, Mary took time away from work to help grow her family with the love of her life, Edward C. Caha. Together, Edward and Mary had two lovely daughters, Anne and Mary. In 1974, Mary went back to work, and spent 29 years culturing minds, young and old, at the Union Public Library, ultimately achieving the position of Supervising Library Assistant. While some call this a job, in Mary's own words, "not one day ever felt like work". Mary was also a very proud and longtime parishioner of Holy Spirit Church in Union. Above all else, the most important thing to Mary was her family. Her family was the devotion of her life, and anyone who had the opportunity to see her with her husband, children or grandchildren would know this to be undeniable.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward; and her brother, Bill Halpin; and her three stepchildren, Diane Caha, Joanne Caha, and Edward Caha, Jr. She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Anne and David Bongiovanni, and Mary and Richard Gambert, four grandchildren, Danielle Bongiovanni, Lauren (Mike), Kristen (Glyn), and Justin (Rachel), as well as two great grandchildren Payton Elizabeth and Jacob Edward.
Family and friends are invited to gather at McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Ave, Union, NJ 07083, on Saturday November 5, 2022 from 9:30am to 10:30am for a celebration of Mary's life. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Holy Spirit Church, 971 Suburban Rd, Union, NJ 07083, on Saturday November 5, 2022 at 10:30am. Committal prayers and a burial service will follow mass at Hollywood Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, it is Mary's express wishes that donations be made to the parish that she loved so much, Holy Spirit Church.
