She was born in the Bronx, NY and moved to Roselle Park with her parents at the age of two. Dorothea attended Sherman Elementary School and Roselle Park High School wherein her quick wit and dramatic talent earned her high marks in theater.
Dorothea married Edward J. Johnson in 1942 and two days later he shipped off to war in North Africa. He was seriously wounded there, recuperating in London and she didn’t see him for three long years. During the war, she worked for NBC Radio as a script router for the likes of Jimmy Durante and other performers. Her husband finally returned from the war, Dorothea (Dot) left her job in NYC, and, together they raised four children.
Dorothea is predeceased by her husband (Edward), her parents Anthony T. and Elizabeth Wingender, her brother Theodore Wingender, and her sisters in law Elizabeth Condon, Elizabeth Johnson, Evelyn Delnero and Anne Wingender and sister in truth, niece Susan Condon. She is also predeceased by brothers-in-law, Thomas Condon, James Johnson and Charles Delnero.
Dorothea is survived by her children, Richard Johnson (Barbara), Raymond Johnson, Eileen Johnson and Kenneth Johnson (Carolyn). She is also survived by her granddaughter, Alison Johnson (Richard and Barbara), her fiancé Thomas Vause. Dorothea is also survived by additional grandchildren Grant Johnson and Briana Johnson (Kenneth and Carolyn). She is also survived by the Condon sisters, Virginia (Ray Shute) and Liz, and Barbara Jean Delnero, nieces by birth, but in fact sisters in truth be told.
A visitation will be held at McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Ave., Union, New Jersey on Tuesday, December 7th from 4 pm to 8 pm. A brief service will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, December 8th, at the Church of the Assumption, 113 Chiego Place, Roselle Park, New Jersey. Interment service will follow at Fairview Cemetery, 1100 E. Broad Street, Westfield, New Jersey.
