Ray was born in June, 1966 in the Dominican Republic to his parents Maria and Ramon Gomez, younger brother to Sandra. Despite that, if you ever asked Ray where he was from he'd never hesitate to say "born and raised in the boogie down Bronx". There was not one person who knew him who didn't feel his pride for the "BX" and New York in general. It was his staple. A die hard Yankee fan with a Robert DeNiro attitude to match, he was a bigger than life experience.
Ray met the love of his life at Dodge high school and shortly after graduating had his first born, his son. Several years after his daughter was born, he brought his family to Union City, NJ. Surrounded by loving family on the block and surrounding area, Ray set up roots in his first home with his wife and kids. He became an excellent truck driver for Opici Wines, covering routes all over the five boroughs of NYC. While at work he met many celebrities and would give bottles of wine in exchange for a selfie and short conversation. After ten hour shifts, he wouldn't forget to pick up our favorite sweets or "just because" gifts on his way home late at night. He had many passions in life, but his family was certainly his greatest.
Rays dedication to his passions and interests were a standout trait in his character. He was a master of DIY projects, completely renovating his home before YouTube tutorials existed. He kept a mini zoo at home for the kids throughout their childhood, we had all sorts of animals 3 dogs, 1 cat, fish, birds, lizards, snakes and spiders. He especially loved dogs, and his passion for dog training allowed him to help family, friends, and even strangers in our local dog park. Ray became known to regulars at
the park as the self- proclaimed DDW, "the Dominican Dog Whisperer" for his skills with handling dogs with difficult behaviors. In time, he was presented an opportunity to save the life of his greatest companion, Lilly, who meant the world to him and is still with us.
Ray's presence was so big it would fill the room. He spoke and carried himself with conviction which made it easy for people to trust and gravitate to him. Ray was outgoing, always had all the best ideas/plans, and made sure everyone around him was taken care of and comfortable. He was also known for being laid back, private, and had the observation skills of a CIA agent.
Ray's greatest blessing and favorite person was his grandson John (JJ). He dedicated all of his free time to JJ. Whether it was babysitting, being a teacher, giving him cooking lessons, vacations, support for school or sport events, JJs "Papa Ray" was ready and there for it all.
Last but not least, Ray was a faithful son to his God Jehovah. No matter the flaws he had or any trials he faced throughout his years, his loyalty to Jehovah always remained strong and deep within his heart.
