Edward Kammer, of Sterling, Ct., passed away peacefully at Hartford Hospital on January 7, 2023, just 3 weeks short of his 92nd birthday. He was the loving husband of the late Helen Baldwin Kammer.
Edward was born in Bayside, New York, to Charles and Antoniette Mahalski Kammer. Edward spent his early years in the Navy, as a proud crew member of the USS Triton, the first nuclear submarine to circumnavigate the globe in 1960.
The biggest part of his working years were spent at SNET as a central office tech, forming lifelong friendships along the way. After retirement, he relocated from Uncasville to Sterling, and enjoyed working again – this time at the Pequot Golf course in Stonington. It was there that he cultivated his golf game, his interest in cooking (tips from the chef), and where he adopted his first of several stray cats, which he cared for up until the very end of his life.
Edward enjoyed his hobbies of woodworking, Montville Little League, and in his later years – he was well known for knitting scarfs and hats for cancer patients. He was a devoted fan of the NY Yankees and the UCONN Women Huskies.
Edward is predeceased by his parents, also siblings Arthur, twin brother Edwin, sister Jean Forino, sister Adele Horan. His wife Helen passed away in 2015.
He is survived by his children Marge (Ronald) Ellingson, Joanne (the late Patrick) Casey, Nancy (David) Forgue, Charlie (Jacki) and Albert (Bonnie) Kammer. He leaves 5 grandchildren, Jason LaVigne, Jeremy LaVigne, Christy Towle, Megan Orr, and Eric Ellingson. He also leaves 4 great grandchildren, Connor and Owen Orr, and Adam and Ryleigh Towle, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, May 8th, 2023 10 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery in Norwich. There are no calling hours. The family wishes to thank Hartford Hospital and the Pallative Care Unit for their kindness and compassion. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ed’s memory to the Connecticut Humane Society.
