Verna M. Carter, known to all as Ginger, passed away on July 3, 2021. She was a long time resident of Chandler and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chandler. Born in Williamsburg, Pennsylvania on October 20, 1935 to the late Howard Walter Rodkey and Mary Scutchall Rodkey. Her parents died when she was very young, she was then moved to Hershey, Pennsylvania, where her brother Raymond raised her.
Verna graduated from Hershey High School in 1953, joined the Women's Army Corp. in 1954. While in the Corp., she trained at Fort McClellan, Alabama and was then assigned to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, where she graduated from Personnel, Finance, and Accounting School. She was then assigned to Fort Dix, New Jersey and later to Mason Forte, Orleans, France where She worked in Personnel and Security. One of her duties was a courier of classified documents to the American Embassy in Paris, France. While Stationed at Mason Forte, she met and married David E. Carter.
While her husband was on active duty they lived in France for two years and at various places in Germany for eleven years. After her husband retired from active duty she lived in Newport News, Virginia where she worked for Hayes and Associates Accounting Firm until moving to Texas in 1977. She worked at K-Mart as a Regional Secretary and retired after twenty years of service.
She is survived by 5 children and a stepdaughter Donna Ingram of Georgia, David and Nicole Carter of Grapevine, Jeffrey and Yazmin Carter of Grand Prairie, Lisa Land, Deborah Boyd, and Sharon Owens of Chandler; grandchildren, Anessa, Justin, Shawn Joe David, Molly, Jennifer, Cody Joe, Patrick, Aerin, and Jeramiah; and 8 great grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by David, her husband of 54 years and grandson Scott.
