Robert enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1963 and honorably discharged in 1967. He married the love of his life, Mary Louise Bumgardner, on Saturday, October 7, 1967 and they lived together in Overton, Texas for the last 32 years, and married for 55 years. Robert enjoyed being outdoors, especially going camping, and really loved to fish. He loved watching fast cars, any kind of racing period, but always drag racing. Robert retired in 2022.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Mary Welch of Overton, Texas; children, Venice (Robert) Brassell of Arab, Alabama, Shannon Welch of Chandler, Texas, and Brian (Niki) Welch of Aledo, Texas; sister, Brenda Clayton of Kerrville, Texas; granddaughters, Briana Welch, Grayce Welch, and Taylor Welch of Aledo, Texas, Katie Brassell, Allie (Robyn) Brassell, and Mandy (Ryan) Reynolds of Arab, Alabama; grandsons, Cole Ryan and Chase Ryan of College Station, Texas; great-granddaughter, Ila Mae Reynolds; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Robert is preceded in death by his son, Robert Eddie Welch; parents, John Ed and Mary Frances Welch; brother, John William "Sonny" Welch; infant brother, Eddie Leamon Welch; and sister, Wanda Jo Mathis.
A celebration of life graveside for Robert will be held Thursday, January 5, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Tyler Memorial Park Cemetery.
